Transition between Year 4 and Year 5 is really important in order to build on prior learning for our pupils.
This is the transition point from Lower Key Stage 2 to Upper Key Stage 2. In some areas pupils transfer to another school.
All Primary schools are focussing on securing understanding and depth in the year group learning rather than acceleration into the following year group content and the DfE guidance is supporting many schools to address key areas.
With the current learning climate and return to school for many pupils it is more important than ever that mathematics is an integral element of transition processes and conversations.
The NCETM have produced some prioritisation materials to secure firm foundations before moving on to new learning.
Completion and discussion of prioritisation documents will aid transition for pupils in these core areas of learning.
Having some reflection on learning and teaching of the ready to progress criteria in the current and previous year group will ensure a smoother transition for our pupils.
Class teachers will know:
what pupils have been taught in previous year groups
how they have been taught
how effectively pupils have understood and remembered learning
This document contains ready to progress criteria from Year 3 and Year 4.
Year 4 teachers complete the last two columns on provision and transition notes.
The RTP assessment section contains MS form quizzes covering year 2 to 4. Instructions and suggestions on how to use these quizzes are available here.
The completed curriculum prioritisation document and data from the quizzes provide detailed information for year 5 teachers.
Year 5 teachers/KS leader can use the data from the quizzes and notes from the year 4 curriculum prioritisation document to identify any gaps and adjust the year 5 curriculum.
In order to aid the transition between Lower KS2 and Upper KS2 we have created some transition quizzes linked to the assessment questions from the DfE Guidance.
These transition quizzes include assessment questions from Y2 up to Y4 so most pupils Y4 pupils will be able to answer questions within each quiz.
There is a transition quiz for each of the Ready to Progress criteria and are sited within each of the RTP sections in the RTP by strand section.
Important notes:
Pupils will need to have access to the questions on paper as well as on the screen - Pupil accessible versions of the assessment questions are available in the RTP by strand section. Just select the relevant year group questions.
Pupils need to be encouraged to do their usual jottings / working out on paper / whiteboard and should not feel they need to do the calculations in their heads
Pupils should use the quiz to input the answer into the computer – this is different to the Y4 MTC (tables check) where they have to respond quickly with no jottings and it may be worth making this clear to pupils.
