Transition between year groups is really important in order to build on prior learning for our pupils.
All schools are focussing on securing understanding and depth in the year group learning rather than acceleration into the following year group content and the DfE guidance is supporting many schools to address key areas.
With the current learning climate and return to school for many pupils it is more important than ever that mathematics is an integral element of transition processes and conversations.
The NCETM have produced some prioritisation materials to secure firm foundations before moving on to new learning.
Completion and discussion of prioritisation documents will aid transition for pupils in these core areas of learning.
Having some reflection on learning and teaching of the ready to progress criteria in the current and previous year group will ensure a smoother transition for our pupils.
Class teachers will know:
what pupils have been taught in previous year groups
how they have been taught
how effectively pupils have understood and remembered learning
Maths planning for the rest of 2020/21 should take account of disrupted schooling in the past two academic years rather than starting the summer curriculum as usual. Linked topics can be addressed together, starting with those from the year below.
Prioritise key topics, rather than trying to teach everything.
Children should experience a positive return to learning maths in school and messages about ‘lost learning’ should be avoided.
Formal written tests should be avoided in favour of devoting time to teaching that involves reconnecting with pupils, assessing informally* and filling in gaps.

*The examples assessment questions and quizzes on this site should be use to assess informally to identify gaps and inform planning.
Every strand in the RTP assessment contains:
links to exemplification resources from year 1 to year 6 including PowerPoints created for use in small groups or one to one to support review, practice, and consolidation.
MS form version of the assessment quizzes covering year 2 to 4 and year 4 to year 6 (ideal for transition)
PowerPoint containing pupil friendly versions of the example assessments from year 1 to year 6
PowerPoints containing pupil friendly versions of the example assessments by year group are available in the Primary section.
Instructions and suggestions on how to use these quizzes are available here.
