KS2

What it is:

Guidance for each year group to see how each of the RTP statements can be assessed. The assessment questions demonstrate the depth and breadth of understanding that pupils need so they are ready to progress to the next year group.

How to use it:

Small, coherent steps in learning should be planned to reach this end goal. Within lessons, carefully selected manipulatives and representations should be used to support understanding and expose the maths. Variation should be planned in to provide opportunity for children to apply their knowledge in a range of situations. Discussions with pupils should take place to develop their thinking and ability to explain their thoughts using correct mathematical terminology

The questions can be incorporated into lessons to informally assess understanding. They can be used to help identify gaps in learning and inform future teaching.

They should not be used as formal written tests as classroom time should be devoted to the teaching rather than testing of pupils.

This echoes the guidance from the NCETM:

'Formal written tests should be avoided in favour of devoting time to teaching that involves reconnecting with pupils, assessing informally and filling in gaps.'
