Week 6

Learning about molds, dies, and other shaping devices as well as processes has been very interesting.

One of the things i was unaware of was the idea of expendable molds. I was under the assumption that all molds were reused simply because it would be easier in that way and save materials also. for example ceramic or metallic molds.

however when thinking about it, it wouldnt make sense as if u poured molten metal into a metal mold it may become bonded to the metal rather and they youd have to destroy the mold to get the product unless u coated it with another separating material to prevent the bonding. expendable molds however solve this problem.

I did not know a lot of things were formed the way they were, for example sinks being deep drawn, i always thought they were just made from some kind of molding and just poured into fit, similarly with cans.
