My interest in the ocean began with a humble fast mollusc called the octopus. After devouring every available video of octopuses solving puzzles, opening child-proof jars, and squeezing through teeny tiny gaps just slightly wider than their beaks, I moved right on to every other strange, wonderful organism that may live in the deep sea. After that, marine ecology was the only thing I felt I wanted to pursue, and in NUS, I had the opportunity to do just that.
My FYP is focused on assessing the effectiveness and feasibility of transplanting macroalgae (seaweed) onto artificial submerged breakwaters as a nature-based solution by testing their ability to mitigate wave action, to reattach to new substrates, and to survive heat waves.
