House style: Harper’s Bazaar also opts for the serif font in its masthead with ‘Harper’s’ always in a small font written in between the larger more prominent letters of ‘Bazaar’. In this cover, the usage of dull lime green compliments the beige background of the cover and the light blue of the cover model’s dress. This colour scheme makes the title stand out and the simplicity of the cover lines and masthead adds to the elegance of the magazine. The cover model’s dress blending with the background makes the main cover line stand out and the minimal cover lines maintain the audience’s focus on the cover model.
Representation of the model: It is rare for a fashion magazine to put forward a full-body model but this particular issue puts forwards Elaine Zhong in a beautiful light blue dress embroidered with sunflowers on the bust and waist. This could be mainly done to attract the audience’s focus on her "dancer's body" as mentioned in the cover line. The pale blue projects a sense of peacefulness and her feminine features adorned with natural-looking makeup give a certain softness to the cover page. House style: The font Elle uses for its masthead is Didot which is serif in nature and is always positioned at the top center of the magazine. The stark lime-green immediately grabs the audience’s attention and is recognizable with a clean style. The title’s colour also coordinates with the cover lines, “best in green beauty.” The magazine is minimalistic with its cover lines giving a contemporary, chic feel and bringing the audience’s full attention to the cover model. Even though the title may cover some of the models’ faces, the close-up of the face maintains the focus of the magazine. The colours may be contradicting each other but the brightness and liveliness still maintain harmony in all elements of the magazine.
Representation of the model: Precious Lee, an African American model is the center of this particular Elle magazine. Bold eye makeup, plump lips, and direct eye contact will capture the audience. There is a certain innocence within her facial expressions but her fierce eye contact gives away a powerful aura. The contradicting colours of orange, yellow, and bright pastel pink pair well together to speak that Precious Lee is part of High-Fashion and how it is her confidence that has pulled together the entire outfit.
Use of Language: “Power of Fashion” signifies how fashion has a very important role and ‘power’ over people of all ages, all around the world. The cover line talking about Serena Williams ‘saving her own life' is not only related to fashion but sports which targets two kinds of audiences. This also mentions a slight idea of women's empowerment and how the audience can learn from it.
Film
House style: The masthead for Total Film magazine is visible at the top of the cover. The word "Film," which is the magazine’s genre, is in a sans-serif font, while the word "Total" is encased inside the letter F in a bold serif font. The colour scheme is complex but harmonizes with the contents of the magazine with black being the signature color of Batman. The white of the main cover line stands out against the deep blacks and reds of the characters. The masthead doesn’t cover the face of Pattinson and the cover lines aren’t haphazardly placed which gives the magazine a clean and chic look attracting a wider and older audience.
Representation of the Model: seeing the magazine has multiple characters, it has done an excellent job in singling out the main model. Robert Pattinson stands in his iconic Batman suit with direct eye contact with the audience asserting dominance. Black in general represents strength, seriousness, power, and authority- the epitome of what the ‘Batman’ character is. Along with the main characters, the side characters have been portrayed in various sizes interrelating to their importance in the movie.
Use of Language: The phrase ‘Incredibly Different, Strange and Touching’ talks about the emotions of the film which makes the audience curious. ‘Reinvents the Dark Knight' is an appealing phrase as batman is a character that we have all known for decades and we've seen the stereotypical movies based on the character, reinventing a character is something that excites the audience as its new and out of the box.
House style: The bright bold red masthead of Empire magazine is a sans serif typeface font, positioned at the top center of the magazine. Even though the title is covered by the model’s head, its bold, all-caps font still receives attention from the audience. The colour scheme is simple with reds, blues, and whites but still creates a dominating effect where the red stands out against the negative hues. Unlike fashion magazines, this film magazine is filled with cover lines related to many different blockbusters and upcoming films keeping the audience excited. Due to the cold, negative hues of the background, the cover model stands out in his black suit.
Representation of the model: Leonardo DiCaprio poses as the main character in the movie “Inception”. He stands at the center holding a gun as a prop indicating that the film revolves around the action. His character looks away from the audience creating a mysterious impact. His serious expression and tense posture suggest that he is ready to fight at any given time. His centralized pose creates a dominating effect on the audience and he portrays the character of the movie mentioned.
Use of language: “The Matrix”, a high-grossing movie that had a large audience hooked being mentioned along with 007 which is the secret code for James Bond, another famous action character is exciting the audience and raising curiosity to watch Inception. ‘Dream Access’ makes the audience feel special and forces them to purchase the magazine to view the contents. Words like ‘PLUS’ showcases how there’s more content within the magazine than what the cover portrays.
House style: The masthead for SFX magazine is a rounded, bright, bold, yellow ochre with silver dimensions to it making it seem 3D in nature. The masthead font is more new-school thus favoring a younger audience than an older one. The yellow ochre catches attention quickly as it's warm and bright against the other cool tones of the cover page. The colour scheme is predominant with hues of blues and reds. The masthead doesn’t cover the face of the model. There are a lot of cover lines present along the model giving out as much content as they can which again signifies the magazine is targeted toward young adults and teens.
Representation of the Model: The main character mentioned in the selling line "Ms. Marvel" is shown in the middle of the cover. She is clad in a blue and red outfit standing in a power stance with fists on either side portraying her unyielding personality and firmness of resolve. House style: Aesthetica mostly uses the times' new roman font for its masthead, positioning it at the top left-hand corner of the cover page. The cover lines on the page are all written in the same font, a typical style used by Aesthetica commonly. This gives a more elegant and chicer look to the magazine. The font size of the taglines is medium to small as the magazine wants the attention to divert towards the art piece rather than the content. In this particular magazine, the colour scheme matches the central art. It is typical for yellow ochre, green, orange and cream to be paired together as the colours look harmonious together. The yellow ochre used in the background usually represents life and creativity but can also symbolize impulsiveness and deceitfulness.
Representation of model: Carrying out the idea above, as the background yellow may symbolize all these meanings, they go in perfect correlation with the model. As seen the face of the model, standing at a ¾ angle, is being covered by a Rubik’s cube. Rubik’s cubes represent life’s complexity, difficulties, elegance, and how problems are solved. Every human has their own set of problems, thus their own personalized Rubik’s cubes that they ought to solve. The model is wearing an orange shirt which symbolizes creativity, a nod to the magazines' genre.
Use of Language: No particular sell lines have been used, but the article “Ethics of Consumption” is a nod to how along with art, the magazine covers culture as well. House style: The font used by Juxtapoz is bold, sharp, and graffiti-like. A dirty yellow colour has been chosen to present the masthead which doesn’t contradict the cover image but is still eye-catching. The masthead is commonly positioned at the top middle of the cover page. As this is an art magazine, a painting is being shown with dominant colours of red and green. There is an abstract feel to the cover image with flows smoothly with the masthead.
Representation of the Model: As seen there is a black man in the middle of the cover page, positioned in a dancing stance. He’s wearing a red blazer with muted pants and a hat. Paying close focus to the shoes of the man, we can see that there are prominent heels at the end, which can lead to the conclusion that the man might be step-dancing. The background consists of numerous circles of eyes focusing on the man in red, but as the colour represents, he is bold, confident, and dominant.
Use of Language: Juxtapoz has a trend of not putting any sell lines or cover lines on their cover page. This is to ensure that the focus isn’t disrupted from the main cover image and that no aspects of it are covered as it is a work of art.
House Style: Apollo usually uses a sans-serif font for its masthead. The masthead is positioned at the top middle of the cover page. It is common for the magazine to have a minimalistic design with an artistic cover image and little to no cover lines. The colour scheme is simple with a rose-coloured masthead and cover lines. The cover image is centralized within the page with white borders around it giving it a canvas effect. This goes well with the image as it is a painting. The cover image is the work of a famous Spanish artist, El Greco.
Representation of the Model: In the middle of the cover page we have a painting by a famous painter known as El Greco who was a huge inspiration for Picasso. We can see that a woman is shown gazing up at the sky with a skull and vines next to her. There is a kind of hope shown in her eyes and the painting itself does have a kind of melodramatic vibe to it.
