Little is known about Elysium in the ‘Before Time’ besides the fact that there was a great war in which many died. Herds of native equines had once lived in separate kingdoms protected by magical prodigies known as Sages. It was these Sages who kept the world balanced and in peace despite tension between all forms of life. As magic was the exclusive right of these herds and belonged to no other.
As the years began to pass the magic within the herds began to fade and as their powers weakened, darker forces began to rise. Those who experienced the Great War have long since died and their stories have since faded into myth.
The ancient kingdoms have all since crumbled and herds now roam freely across Elysium doing what they can to survive. The memories of these ancient kingdoms still remain in the form of fading magic that still survives in some individuals.
General area around a portal of shadow and darkness. The very ground seems to reek of evil magic and shady doings. The soil is completely devoid of nutrients and nothing grows for miles around the crack in reality. Trees are spotty and only stand petrified and blackened across the landscape. The only thing that seems to find life here is lichen and moss.
Rumors state that lingering here will literally poison your soul, either dropping you on the spot from exposure or rotting your existence from the inside out. Even those who spend a short amount of time here are left with strange side effects. The portal itself remains hidden, no one ever venturing far enough in to find it's EXACT location.
Herd members who commit serious crimes or have a death wish are often sentenced to roam these lands. Blights roam these parts in high concentrations and are quick to attack strangers.
This western most track of land is mostly open plains with small forests dotted here or there. No one is sure what these lands used to be ruled by but strange structures made from stone occasionally break up the horizon.
While these old structures are great for temporary shelter, it's unwise to linger here. Goblins, ghouls and trolls are common in these parts not to mention the Dragons who also frequent these areas. Rumor has it that the answer to what happened in the 'Before Time' lies somewhere buried in these ruins but so far, no one is brave enough to explore them.
The more norther stretches of the coast are known for their high white chalky cliffs and scraggy, patchy forests.
A long series of mountains whose tops have never been seen due to the permanent cloud cover that plagues their peaks. Lore describes the mountains of a place of enlightenment but also assured death to those who wish to travel there. Half of those who seem to trek into the mist either come back with strange abilities or with their mind half melted.
Old stories tell that Air Sages once ruled the top of the mountains, boosting brilliant cities but no one has managed to find them. Lost to all those who already know they exist is a land of tar and sulfur hidden deep within the rift. Broody volcanoes bubble and hiss, their smoke lost to the copious clouds that safeguard Elysium from these earthen dragons.
These mountains are also home to elusive ethereal unicorns who hide away from the 'low landers' of greater Elysium.
The largest forest on the continent, the Blooming Territories were once the kingdom protected by Sages gifted with earth magic. Myth says these great servants of the soil kept the forest healthy, guided the growth of trees and farmed flowers! Since the fall, the forest has been left to grow wild.
Ancient tree’s hundreds of feet tall and across choke the innermost groves, making them impossible to enter to all but the smallest field mouse. The forests are typically very safe, offering copious resources but also attracting hungry carnivores looking for an easy meal.
Most of Elysiums remaining unicorns choose to live here as the pro's tend to outweigh the cons of calling this living forest home.
The hottest region in Elysium, the Flame Expanse is a large ocean of golden grasses with the occasional oasis to break up the horizon. Known for scorching summers and frequent droughts it was once protected by Fire Sages who used their skill with an open flame to keep raging wildfires from overtaking the rest of the continent.
With their decline, this area is highly unpredictable. It’s worth your life to adventure into during the spring when wildfires are the most aggressive. This area would most closely resemble the heated African plains.
The largest body of water in all of Elysium. It snuggles up again the Blossoming territories to the northeast of the continent. Entirely fresh water, it’s much colder up north than it’s southern half. Most residents keep to the north as the temperature keeps the Colossal Crocs from being a threat.
The lake was once controlled more closely by the Water Sages of old but is now a ‘Swim at your own Risk’ sort of place. Most of the water comes from melting ice and snow from the Veiled Rift. The lake supplies most of the continent with fresh water as nearly all rivers and streams lead back to it
Moving south from Noktara Lake, the grasslands fade into scorching desert covered in sandy dunes. None but the strongest survive here where water never seems to fall and you have nothing but sand under foot.
It's so named for the plethora of snakes that seem to reside here as well as the constant howling wind that, when it catches the tops of the dunes, makes a faint hissing sound. Oh, and basilisks live here. Did we forget to mention those?
The entire southern half of Elysium fades away into a vast frozen tundra. Temperatures hover around freezing nearly year round but drop well below freezing at night. Due to its southernmost location, these lands suffer through nights that last for months on end as well as prolonged days.
No one really bothers to go here as it's practically a death sentence to travel to this point in the world. Food is scarce and running water even more so. Not to mention you have to make it through the Hissing Sands before you can freeze to death here.
