Patrols and Hunts are two new in-game activities designed for players looking for a more controlled adventure, extra ways to earn loot or those just wanting to grow their characters stats. Patrols are specifically designed for unicorns while Hunts are for our dragon friends. Each activity may be undertaken once a week per character but can not be taken again until the results of the previous patrol/hunt have been posted. Like Adventures, players will actually have their hunts and patrols rolled before submissions are created. We hope this allows players more options for what they can draw and/or write about.
Players may have characters patrol on their own or with up to three other characters (for a max of 4 characters per activity). Lead Stallions or Mares are not required to be apart of Hunts or Patrols for them to be accepted.
But what is a Patrol?
Well for our unicorn pals it's simple! Most player herds wander here or there but for those who plan on staying in a certain area for any length of time usually do so only when they think the area is safe. How do they know it’s safe? Why, they patrol it of course!
Patrols are designed to allow players to seek out and battle certain monsters from our Monster Manual in order to level their characters and earn experience. Most monsters can be encountered at random with submissions or when taking on Adventures. However, most adventures are rather dangerous and come with the risk of serious injury. For our baby adventurers, they need a way to level up in relative safety. Thus, Patrols!
It should be noted that not all monsters can be found at the drop of a hat. Some of these more nefarious creatures are tough to locate or simply tricky to get to. Minor Foes are the easiest to find and will not have a dice DC to locate. However, monsters ranked higher than this will.
Worthy Opponents will only be found after succeeding a DC 8 investigation or perception check.
Credible Threats will only be found after succeeding a DC 13 investigation or perception check.
Gravediggers will only be found after succeeding a DC 18 investigation or perception check.
Now our Dragons have little need to patrol their presumed territory (though they are more than welcome to) but one major difference between our playable dragons and unicorns is their need to hunt. Hunts are designed to give Dragons the same opportunities to level up as our unicorns but in the form of hunting down their delicious dinners.
Dragons have a slew of prey available to them depending on which area of Elysium they choose to hunt in but with those hunts, come dangers. Other hungry mouths may attempt to steal their meals or think that the feasting beast is vulnerable to an attack. Some prey items offer more of a challenge and may even attempt to fight back when cornered so be sure to choose your prey carefully! Additionally, when medium - large prey are felled, the smell of the kill may end up attracting even bigger monsters! Who said being a predator was easy?
The biggest difference between the two is the nature of each one. Dragons may go on Patrols with their unicorn friends they may be residing with, Unicorns CAN NOT go on hunts because...well...they don't need meat! Not to mention, seeing a peaceful creature being torn to shreds isn't exactly something they want to see, especially since they could be considered prey to some dragons.
In addition to giving players a safer way to level up and improve their characters, monsters they defeat drop special loot. These special items may sound generic but have several uses.
They can be traded in to our newest NPC ‘Grimble the Greedy’ for bonus gemstones.
OR
They can be saved and used for crafting!!
Players can take a look at our Crafting Book to see the recipes for some familiar shoppe items as well as a few new things that Grimble may help you make. Keep in mind, most (but not all) of these items are geared towards character stat growth, an optional part of our group.
Grimble is a tenacious Sky Scribe who boasts that he has the largest collection of treasure on the eastern side of Elysium. He's a downright hoarder which actually works well for you as it means he has just about everything and is willing to haggle and trade if it means adding to his hoard. Grimble can also be enticed to help a character craft something from the various loot one may acquire through adventuring, patrolling or hunting. With the aid of his fire breath, he can help smelt metals and make armors as well as other trinkets should you ask it of him.
However he does charge for his services so be mindful. Interested? Click his craft book below!
Members wishing to craft something for themselves need only leave a comment on our crafting thread!
Hunts and Patrols are handled a little differently than regular submissions. Similarly to Adventures, players will actually receive their results BEFORE they submit anything to the group. Players will submit their hunt or patrol request via the DA Journal detailing this activity. There, they will learn if the patrol/hunt was successful in locating their chosen foe or prey.
Combat will also be handled via the original comment, allowing for players to learn the full outcome of their hunt/patrol. We've chosen to do things this way so players have more variety in what they can write or draw about!
!! Important Note !!
Players will not earn loot, gemstones, items or experience until they make a submission detailing the results of their rolled patrol/hunt.
New hunt/patrol requests can be not be made for characters until their previous ones have an accepted submission in the group.
Any Hunt/Patrol submission, be it drawn or written, should be submitted to the appropriate folder. This would be the Patrol or Hunting sub-folder either in the literature or artwork main folder.
For patrols or hunts to be accepted, they should meet the following minimum criteria:
Drawn submissions must:
Depict included characters partial to full bodied, in color
Appropriate background must be included (region you are patrolling) in color
Written submissions must:
Be at least 400 words long per included character to count
Detail the region the characters are patrolling in, either with descriptive details or by name dropping it outright
Written or Drawn submissions are encouraged to depict some of the following aspects of the patrol/hunt:
Detailing characters agreeing to and setting out on the patrol / hunt
Detail characters uncovering signs or markings of a foe / prey
Ambushing a foe / desired prey
The battle between foes or prey
