Elysium has become a much more wild landscape in the last few centuries in the wake of the Shadow Gate's opening. Even before that time, creatures of all shapes and sized roamed the lands! While some have since disappeared, there are still plenty of other wild monsters to encounter.
While we have highlighted some of our more infamous monsters below, a full list of every threatening beast in each biome came be found below!
A massive serpent capable of swallowing a unicorn whole! They are luckily very rare and are fairly easy to be avoid. With near impenetrable scales and a killing gaze, they are to be avoided at all costs!
Luckily, these serpents they don't just prefer living in hot climates; they ONLY live in hot climates! These massive serpents live exclusively in the Hissing Sands. Funny enough, the desert itself was named due to this rather nasty inhabitant. The king of serpents is in fine company in the sea of boiling sands as tons of other snakes call the desert home.
Normally a blanket term used to describe creatures infected by the Black Reach. Unicorns who succumb to Shadow magic are also referred to as 'Blights' no matter the chain of Shadow magic they inherit. The Reach infects different creatures in unique ways but tends to make them unholy monsters of ghastly appearance. These monsters loose all sense of self and will tear through anything and anyone they deem as an enemy. Most Blights reach a point in their rage where the only thing that will stop them is death.
Blights are known to have Shadow Magic which comes in three strains: Reaper, Incantationist and Plague.
Large, stupid and always hungry. These monsters tend to keep to the high mountains and lurk in caves. They always attack on sight and will eat anything they can get a hold of. While very similar at a glance, there are differences between these two troll species.
Cave Trolls tend to be more aggressive and stupid. They never wander far from their caves and use their mangled fingernail sand rotten teeth as their primary means of attack.
Mountain Trolls on the other hand are only, slightly, more intelligent. These lumbering trolls tend to use large clubs. They also possess a thicker hide than Cave Trolls allowing them to wander about during the day so long as it's overcast.
Cave bears are an uncommon site in Elysium but are fearsome when they are encountered. Massive in size, male cave bears can easily reach 5.5 ft tall at the shoulder. When they rear back on their hind legs they can easily tower over an adult unicorn. Cave bears at normally docile when they're well fed but will eat anything when they're hungry. They are also especially agitated when they come out of hibernation in the spring.
Cave bears live excursively around the Veiled Rift and are most common around the northern half of the continent.
Found in both salt and freshwater, Crocs are incredibly dangerous and not to be taken lightly. They guard their watery homes with a mouth full of teeth and powerful jaws capable of ripping a troll in half. Luckily they’re practically useless on land, lumbering about slowly and sluggishly.
No one knows how large they can grow since most who end up close enough to measure them end up as lunch. They average about 30 ft in length however with mouths large enough to swallow a foal in one bite.
They are most common in the southern waters of Lake Nokotara and lurking in the rivers that cut through the Flaming Expanse.
Large and hungry predators, Dire wolves are larger than the average wolf. While both Dires and regular wolves roam Elysium, only Dire wolves pose a real threat to a Unicorn. Often living in large packs, they tend to lurk around forests that border grasslands or plains. They like to spook prey from the woods where the trees make long pursuits difficult and flush them onto the open plains for easy take downs.
**Alpha Dire Wolf**
Alpha wolves are larger and meaner than the average Dire Wolf. Pack leaders are always accompanied by 2 other wolves. They are multi-attackers and can make 2 bites per turn.
Ranging from the size of house cats to the size of castles, Dragons are a formidable foe in Elysium. The top predator in the land, they vary in form depending on where they’re from. Most are fairly docile unless hungry and are intelligent, respectful creatures. They have a great appreciation for other natural born Elysium and prefer to stick to their own kind .
Vulcanos Dragons and Sky Scribes are two of the most common Dragons to be seen in Elysium while larger, more dangerous types hide about in ruins.
Normally a passive and docile dragon, Sky Scribes can be provoked into attacking if threatened or annoyed enough. They will protect their nests with great ferocity.

Known unicorn eaters, Vulcanos dragons will not be restrained if challenged. Arguably Elysiums top predator, these dragons are dangerous at all stages of life.
Luckily, these great beasts primarily live on the western side of Elysium where they brood over ancient treasure hordes.
Vulcanos dragons are deadly in every regard but meeting one does not automatically spell death. These dragons are surprisingly intellectual and prideful. Should you prove useful to them or give them the proper compliment they may grant you a gift; your life!
A small spirit inhabitant of Elysium that tends to the natural order of the world. Typically docile and kind they are also very shy and never take physical form unless they're alone or know they're safe. Capable of mischief and thievery they pose little threat and prefer to be left alone. Depending on where you find yourself you may be able to spot different varieties of Finnicks as their color depends on the region they protect and live in.
Humongous beings capable of towering 15-20 feet tall! Much more intelligent than most give them credit for, they have a knack for crafting and love to bargain. Very reclusive their numbers have dwindled over the years. They’re weary of outsiders and will defend their homes with great force if necessary. Should you wish to meet one, they typically live deep in the mountain ranges of north and southern Elysium.
Hideous monsters of a humanoid form. Emaciated and feral they lurk around graveyards and places that animals go to die. They prefer to eat dead flesh as they themselves are quite fragile. Allergic to sunlight they must hide from direct light and tend to be nocturnal. While normally docile, they can be provoked into a swarm that takes hours to calm down.
They usually pull together scraps of cloth and anything else they can pull up from graves to try and cover their skin as it's prone to falling off. It also helps protect them from the sun, allowing them out even on cloudy days.
** Ghouls are weak but still dangerous as they can infect characters with 'Blight' with their claw attack **
About the size of a child, goblins are vile little villains that lurk underground. Capable of crafting crude weapons they only come out at night to hunt for food and to satisfy their lust for gold. Generally only dangerous in large swarms they’re still nasty to tango with if caught alone. They are known for stalking herds in the hopes of kidnapping newborn foals.
King of the skies, the griffin is half lion, half eagle. Bringers of justice and protectors of the weak, Griffins haven’t been seen since the ‘Before Time’. It’s believed that they were hunted out of existence by Goblins who have always hated the creatures.
Myth says that the Griffins were responsible for driving Goblins underground and despite them being extinct, their species still fears returning to the ‘above world’ in the daylight. Still, many claim to see them from time to time. Sightings are frequent but never very specific.
Most sightings are of passing shadows followed by a strange screech and the discover of an eagle feather. It's believed these sightings are simply passing eagles or even the occasional dragon spooking birds.
Howler or Howler(s) (plural) are medium to large carnivorous animals native to select habitats of Elysium. Named for their distinctive howling call, these predators live in medium sizes prides and hunt in groups. Thanks to their horns, they are often mistaken for dragons at a glance. Truthfully, these mammalian creatures behave more similarly to lions and wolves. Howlers are not all that common, their populations small and restricted to very specific regions.
Howlers are interesting as they are not outright dangerous unless hungry. A well fed Howler is incredibly docile, even friendly to other creatures that cross their path. However their unpredictable behavior adds to the danger factor as their faces don't express their emotions clearly. Behind their lips are rows of sharp teeth excellent for catching and holding their prey. Howlers have a surprisingly strong bite force, capable of snapping bone with a long enough hold. These hunters will try anything once and are rumored to even take snaps at passing Sky Scribes if hungry enough.
The legendary bird of fire and rebirth! Symbols of the Phoenix appear all over Elysium but no one really knows why. Little is truly known of them since no one has ever actually seen one! They exist as small mentions in the oldest of stories as symbols of hope and proof that a characters quest is justified.
Some believe the power of a Phoenix could close the Shadow Gate but since none are known to exist, hope dwindles that it may ever be sealed.
Small to medium sized feline that lives exclusively in forested areas. Spotted Forest Cats are extremely exclusive and rarely encountered. These hunters are smart and solitary, preferring to hunt birds and small mammals. Larger males can be a danger to new born foals but these felines are, more or less, not a threat to Elysium Unicorns unless truly desperate.
Spotted Forest Cats are smaller than wolves and howlers and are usually around 20 inches tall at the shoulder.
