Abstract: This paper will illustrate how the method of oral history, based on life-story interviews, can be employed to inquire into translational habitus. It will argue that oral testimony, as an alternative form of looking at history, is a valid method in the study of habitus, because life-story interviews allow us to approach the issue of agency and subjectivity in interpreting, by enabling us to explore the habitus of interpreters from within through their own narratives. The paper will firs examine the link between the concept of habitus and (auto)biographical data elicited from life-story interviews, review some of the methodological issues, and finally attempt to seek the potential of oral history as a method to identify the interpreting habitus. The methodological question of oral history will be discussed in terms of its validity, reliability and representativeness. For instance, some cast doubt on the truthfulness and correctness of narratives as evidence, and others maintain that oral history lacks consistency, a prerequisite for reliability. In addition, there are technical problems pertinent to oral data, such as interviewing techniques, transcribing processes, and the final analysis and interpreting of the data. Despite some possibly inherent weaknesses of the method; however, using oral data of life stories can be an effective tool in delving into habitus, a set of dispositions, attitudes, values, habits and skills. Since habitus is the product of individual history as well as the whole collective history of family and class, interpreter’s own voices should offer us a rich source for understanding their habitus.

Abstract: In recent years, technologically advanced methodologies such as Translog have gained a lot of ground in translation process research. However, in this paper it will be argued that quantitative research methods can be supplemented by ethnographic qualitative ones so as to enhance our understanding of what underlies the translation process. Although translation studies scholars have sometimes applied an ethnographic approach to the study of translation, this paper offers a different perspective and considers the potential of ethnographic research methods for tapping cognitive and behavioural aspects of the translation process. A number of ethnographic principles are discussed and it is argued that process researchers aiming to understand translators’ perspectives and intentions, how these shape their behaviours, as well as how translators reflect on the situations they face and how they see themselves, would undoubtedly benefit from adopting an ethnographic framework for their studies on translation processes.

Abstract: How disciplines approach their objects of inquiry is a result of their epistemological traditions, which include decisions about what they choose to examine and what they decide to ignore. As an interdiscipline, Interpreting and Translation Studies (ITS) was born to overcome the limits of discipline-specific approaches to translation and interpreting, and when observing complex real-life phenomena, examining issues through an interdisciplinary lens can reveal things that approaches from single disciplines on their own would miss. This feature article reviews how ITS has shaped Public Service Interpreting and Translation (PSIT), focusing specifically on the advantages and vulnerabilities that its interdisciplinary nature yields as regards research methods. Three distinctive features and their impact on research methods are examined: (1) the complexity of the object of inquiry, (2) the novelty of the disciplinary field that aims to scrutinize and to explain PSIT, and (3) the changes that the social sciences in general have undergone and are currently undergoing, opening up new opportunities for research practices and methodological reflections. Contemplations of these features reveal issues identified and the efforts undertaken to tackle them in relation to the internal and external validity of research studies as well as unexplored strengths and roadblocks in the path towards achieving a critical mass of studies that can adequately represent the relevance of PSIT in contemporary societies.

Sawyer, David B. 2012. "The Role of Interlingual Mediation in Public Diplomacy: An Exploration of Research Methodologies." T&I Review 2: 31-51.
Abstract: The role of translation and interpreting in public diplomacy has received little attention in the Interpreting and Translation Studies communities. In a discussion of research methodologies in public diplomacy and Interpreting Studies (IS), this article explores the relationships between these two fields and generates starting points for inquiries into the use of interpreting and translation in real world public diplomacy settings. Methodological overlap is considered to gauge the potential for interdisciplinary collaboration, and IS research questions are developed to address strategies and the effectiveness of interlingual mediation practices in public diplomacy in the United States.

Abstract: This article reports on an interpretive content analysis of fourteen research methods texts. We read them as a genre-exploring their structural and rhetorical features-to address two questions: To what extent do research methods texts reflect the breadth of methods used in political science and its fields? To what extent do they reflect contemporary ferment concerning questions of social reality and its "knowability?" These questions are intertwined with each other-epistemological positions on what counts as "science" affect the methods presented-and with the misleading distinction between "quantitative" and "qualitative" methods. Although these texts vary considerably in the degree to which they engage epistemological issues, all fourteen texts explicitly endorsed or implicitly assumed positivist definitions of science, which can be seen in their treatments of "qualitative" methods issues. Interpretive methods of data access and analysis are almost entirely "disappeared," and positivist qualitative methods of data access receive treatment that ranges from poor to excellent. This textual consensus on positivism as the mode of scientific research in political science has implications for professional practice in four areas: the possibility of field-neutral methods texts, student research agendas, disciplinary meanings associated with "method" and "methodology," and researchers' professional identity as political scientists.
