iQoro

iQoro is described as a neuromuscular training device invented and developed in Sweden by Mary Hägg, Associate Professor in experimental ear, nose and throat diseases at Uppsala University. It was introduced in 2016 and now manufactured by MYoroface who have inaugurated International Reflux Day on 9th November.

The device is approved in UK and available on NHS as from 1 May 2022.

Simply put, the device is used to help train muscles to swallow better, as shown in this YouTube video, to treat the root cause of:

– Reflux

– Heartburn

– A feeling of a lump in the throat

– Thick, frothy phlegm

– Snoring

– Sleep apnoea

A June 2015 paper published in the World Journal of Gastroenterology, "Esophageal dysphagia and reflux symptoms before and after oral IQoroR training" found: "Oropharyngeal dysphagia can be improved by training with an IQoroR screen (IQS). The present study investigated whether IQS training may improve esophageal dysphagia (ED) in a similar manner as surgical repair of a hiatal hernia. Forty-three patients with longstanding ED and reflux symptoms, which were not relieved by treatment with proton pump inhibitors, received IQS training three times daily for six months; all showed increased diaphragm hiatus pressure. ED improved in 42 patients and reflux symptoms improved in 36. IQS training can be a valuable alternative to surgery with restoration of hiatal competence in patients with ED and reflux symptoms."

A July 2015 paper published in Acta Larygologica, "Effect of IQoro(R) training in hiatal hernia patients with misdirected swallowing and esophageal retention symptoms" concluded: "Misdirected swallowing can be triggered by esophageal retention and hiatal incompetence. The results show that oral IQoro(R) screen (IQS) training improves misdirected swallowing, hoarseness, cough, esophageal retention, and globus symptoms in patients with hiatal hernia."
