Acid reflux has been associated with other maladies. There may or may not be causal connections, and they maybe epiphenomena but this page looks at them and will add any appropriate links to scientific findings evinced.
A Chinese study in December 2023 looked at associations between Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) and GastroEsophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), finidng that "for the European population, GERD can induce the occurrence of RA, whereas RA only has no significant influence on GERD.
In particular, European GERD patients are suffering a 69% increased risk of RA occurrence, which means GERD is a substantial risk factor for RA.Â
Published Spetember 2024, Upper Gastrointestinal Mucosal Damage and Subsequent Risk of Parkinson Disease published in Gastroenterology and Hepatology concluded, "This study found that a history of upper GI MD was associated with an increased risk of subsequently developing PD. These findings highlight the necessity for heightened monitoring of patients with MD given their increased clinical PD susceptibility and the importance of establishing gut biomarkers. With Peptic Ulcer Disease globally affecting upwards of 8.09 million people31 and H pylori infection even more widespread, timely detection and treatment of H pylori infection, along with MD management, may prove crucial to early recognition of risk of and potentially intervention against PD."
