Fu He An, a troupe of traditional Chinese glove puppetry, was founded by Tok Hok Lay. Its plays, music, performance and musician structures, as well as performance form preserve the traditions of Chinese glove puppetry. Tok Hok Lay, influenced by his father and grandfather, inherited the career as a puppeteer. The troupe currently has seven puppeteers and more than 20 musicians in addition to the founder.
Fu He An’s plays are all from Chinese traditional stories, such as Butterfly Lovers, Journey to the West, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, The Legend of Xue Rengui, among others. All of their performances are accompanied by live music. The puppets used for performances are crafted by Tok Hok Lay or purchased from craftspersons.
Tok Hok Lay believes that glove puppetry has strong power, and is the soul and core for all performances.
Tok Hok Lay
Fu He An is invited to perform at temples almost every month, and most of the performances last one to three months. Additionally, the troupe also performs at shopping centers or schools during the lunar new year. In 2017 and 2018, Fu He An’s temple performances mostly had at least 25 audiences, but the number has dropped since 2020 due to the pandemic.
Fu He An was invited to participate in the 2014 Asian Glove Puppet Theatre ”Potehi” Japan Tour, 2015 Potehi in Southeast Asia and Taiwan, and the 2016 Georgetown Festival in Penang, Malaysia.
