Professor Amelia Lapeña-Bonifacio founded Teatrong Mulat ng Pilipinas in 1977. “Mulat” means “open” and “awaken.” The Theatre hopes the children can be awakened to the beauty and abundance of Filipino culture, and be introduced to the Asian culture that they are unfamiliar with. Mulat is inspired by Indonesia Wayang Golek (rod puppetry), Wayang Kulit (shadow puppetry) and Japanese bunraku. The Theatre is a pioneer of puppetry in the Philippines. Their performances are mostly children’s plays based on Filipino and Asian folk stories.
In 2006, with the assistance of the former president, Fidel V. Ramos, and former vice president, Joseph Estrada, the first puppet museum in the Philippines, Amelia Lapeña-Bonifacio Papet Teatro-Museo, was founded.
Most of Teatrong Mulat ng Pilipinas’s plays are adapted by its founder, Amelia Lapena-Bonifacio, from folk stories or legends of the Philippines or other Asian countries.
All rod and shadow puppets used for performances are designed and crafted by the members of the Theatre.
Teatrong Mulat ng Pilipinas usually hosts around 20 shows each year. Most of them are indoor performances at schools or theatres. The shows mostly take place in Quezon City, but would also be staged in other places if invited,
Teatrong Mulat ng Pilipinas is often invited to participate in international puppet art festivals, mostly in Asia. They learn from the experiences performing abroad that nonverbal shows are better when facing language barriers.
Through the help of the embassy and nonprofit organizations, Teatrong Mulat ng Pilipinas also invites puppet artists from other countries to perform.
