Introduction

Founded in April 2008, Paper Monkey Theatre Ltd has puppet master and playwright Benjamin Ho as its creative director, and prides itself on quality theatre productions. Paper Monkey has been showcasing children-orientated theatre productions and workshops, using traditional paper shadow puppetry as the primary medium, to promote theatrical arts, Asian cultures and puppet arts.

Mission and Vision

Paper Monkey Theatre Ltd pays close attention to the relationship and coexistence between humans, as well as between humans and the environment. Paper Monkey enjoys exploring unknown Asian folklores and mythologies as its inspiration for creations. They also do research on the cultural and artistic framework of the original stories of their adapted pieces. For instance, they have used "Dikir Barat" (a native Malay musical form) and Wayang Golek as a medium to perform Malay stories. Paper Monkey not only aims to preserve the stories that have been around people for a thousand years, but is also dedicated to passing down Asian cultures and heritages to the next generation.

Performance Scale

Paper Monkey Theatre Ltd usually has one to two new productions each year. The performance space includes schools, community centers, art museums or even private foundations. Most of Paper Monkey’s shows are held indoors, and very rarely they are staged in outdoor space as it has more technical requirements. Most of the performance spaces provided for Paper Monkey are unconventional theatre spaces.

International Exchange

Benjamin Ho, creative director of Paper Monkey Theatre Ltd, has a vision of making Singapore a hub for Eastern and Western puppetry exchange for its unique locality. Ho wishes to contribute to transnational learning and studying of Asian puppetry’s history and form.

Paper Monkey has been participating in puppet art festivals around the world, including Taiwan, Thailand, India, the United Kingdom, China and more.
