The Southeast Asian region is not only a beloved tourist spot, its diverse, unique and charming puppetry heritages are also world-renowned. Though the countries are constantly influenced by different cultures and religions, and are challenged by the new era, the profuse genres of puppetry and exquisite crafts continue to fascinate the world.
Lìzé Puppet Art Colony has been actively engaged in cultural exchange with Southeast Asian puppet troupes in the past few years. There will be a series of exciting virtual events in November 2021. Through forums, workshops, performance screenings and other events, we welcome everyone to be friends with Southeast Asian puppets!

B. Workshop - Wayang Suket (Traditional Javanese Straw Puppets)

Wayang Suket Indonesia is dedicated to passing on the Javanese cultural tradition of Wayang Suket in the hope that the younger generations can learn about and identify with this traditional culture. Through performances, workshops, exhibitions and other activities, Wayang Suket Indonesia aims to expand the influence of Indonesian folk stories and Wayang Suket.
Gaga Rizky will be introducing an Indonesian cultural heritage, Wayang Suket’s history, philosophy and performance features. Participants will be led to create a simple straw puppet.

Myanmar Marionette Theatre
Myanmar’s string puppetry has been gradually going extinct under the development of contemporary entertainment. Myanmar Marionette Theatre hopes to revive this cultural tradition through regular performances incorporating Myanmar music, dance, sculpture, embroidery, painting and other forms of traditional arts, as well as actively engaging with cultivating talents in puppetry.
Chin Fei Feng Marionette Theatre Troupe, Taiwan
Founded in the 1920s, Chin-Fei-Feng’s puppetry style belongs to the Quanzhou School of string puppetry which focuses on performances at religious rituals and cultural events. Chin-Fei-Feng is often invited to participate in both domestic and international art festivals, and has been nominated as the “Best Performing Arts Troupe of Kaohsiung” multiple times. Recently, Chin-Fei-Feng is actively invested in cultural preservation, promotion and inheritance.

Introduction of the Troupe
Homemade Puppet Group, Thailand
Homemade Puppet Group is a shadow puppet and object theatre founded by puppet artist, Sutarath Sinnong (Tom). Most works are solo pieces. As the troupe's name suggests, Sutarath emphasizes the power of “handmaking.” Homemade Puppet Group cares for environmental issues, as well as the diversity of people, society, thinkings and beliefs.
Puppets by Jae, Thailand
Founded by Sirikarn Bunjongtad (Jae), Puppets by Jae pays attention to equality, diversity, immigration and democracy. Their works often incorporate local mythologies with social issues. Most of the performances combine and use different types of puppets, such as shadow puppets, table-top puppets, mouth puppets, masks and more to inspire the audience to express their creativity.

The two puppetry troupes from Malaysia have distinct backgrounds and approaches to cultural preservation and innovation. The director of Teochew Puppet and Opera House, Ling Goh, inherits the family-run traditional theatre; while FWK’s creative director, Tintoy Chuo, has his background in multimedia arts. This forum invites two founders of puppet troupes to share how they promote, pass on and innovate iron rod puppetry and shadow puppetry.

Introduction of the Troupe
Teochew Puppet and Opera House, Malaysia
Teochew Puppet and Opera House was founded by Ling Goh in Penang, Malaysia. Through open public performances, the troupe promotes Teochew drama, iron rod puppetry and other traditional theatrical cultures. Teochew Puppet and Opera House often participates in art festivals globally. Meanwhile, they also adopt innovative ways of performance and advertisement to draw audiences of younger generations.
Fusion Wayang Kulit (FWK), Malaysia
FUSION WAYANG KULIT (FWK) was founded by Tintoy Chuo and led by Pak Dain, Master Puppeteer (Tok Dalang). The troupe is invested in fusing puppet arts with digital and multimedia arts, and often adopts pop cultures, such as Star Wars, Batman, Macross and more, as their creative themes.

Papermoon Puppet Theatre has been attracting the attention of children and adult audiences through its exquisite puppets and plays that demonstrate the care for humanity. This event will screen A bucket of beetles, a special program recorded by Papermoon Puppet Theatre during the pandemic. The talkback invites the artists to share their journey of Papermoon’s development, and introduce their creative base in Yogyakarta.

Papermoon Puppet Theatre, Indonesia
Papermoon Puppet Theatre is active on the stages of international art festivals. The Theatre has been constantly exploring experimental performances of contemporary theatre, collaborating with interdisciplinary artists, hosting puppetry workshops regularly and international artist-in-residence programs. Papermoon established the biennial puppet art festival, Pesta Boneka, in Yogyakarta in 2008.
