The compressor is widely appreciated by sound engineers due to a specific distinctive tone-colour it adds to a signal, uncommonly fast attack and release times and different compression ratios and modes. An 1176 is a model for many recreations and emulations of the effect, either in a hardware or a software form (plug-ins).
