noun
The member of the guitar family reaching the lowest pitch. The instrument is similar in terms of appearance and construction to an electric or an acoustic guitar, but it has a longer neck and scale length, and typically four or five strings. It is usually played by plucking strings, but it also can be played with a pick. Since the mid-1950s, the bass guitar has largely replaced a double bass in popular music.
