A type of single-reed woodwind instrument* with usually made of brass. A sound is produced when a reed on a mouthpiece vibrates to produce a soundwave inside the instrument's body. The pitch, in turn, is controlled by opening and closing holes in the body to change the length of the tube.
*although saxophone is made of brass, it is considered a woodwind instrument, since it needs a wooden reed in order to produce sounds
