noun
A fretted musical instrument. A guitar commonly has six strings. It is played by strumming or plucking the strings with the dominant hand, either with player's fingers, or with the use of a pick, while simultaneously pressing the strings against frets with the fingers of the opposite hand. The sound of the guitar is transmitted either acoustically, by a resonant chamber on the instrument, or by an electronic pick-up and then amplified by an amplifier.
