13h Striae distinct 4-47 mm L; mature leaves intermediate between matt greyish-green and glossy dark green; underside of leaves some reddish hairs among a majority of grey; twigs intermediately hairy; more common than the pure S. cinerea ssp. oleifolia (Red willow).
► Salix x guinieri (S. cinerea ssp. cinerea x S. cinerea ssp. oleifolia)
13i Striae 2-5 mm L; leaves bright green above, bluish-green below; sparsely grey hairy or glabrous above; underside variably hairy, sometimes reddish, nervature underside not conspicuous; 2-4.5 (-5)cm L; 0.8-2.3 cm W; usually with a straight leaf tip, rather rarely twisted; leaf margin not quite entire margin and often slightly recurved, not strongly wrinkled or corrugated but flat; stipules small and soon falling off; thin bare twigs often conspicuously orange or reddish; usually up to 1m H.
► Salix x subsericea (S. cinerea x S. repens)
13j Striae 2-15 mm L; leaves short-lot inversely ovate to elliptic; 0.8-4.5 cm L, 0.4-2 cm W; leaves slightly hairy underneath, hairy or not hairy above; leaf margin often somewhat involuted and somewhat more wavy towards the apex; apex itself sometimes flat, sometimes twisted; stipules conspicuous and persistent; on desiccation sometimes some blackening leaves.
► Salix x ambigua (S. aurita x S. repens)
13k Striae 2-26 mm L; leaves 3-4.5 cm L; rest characteristics as 13j.
► Salix x straebleri (S. aurita x S. cinerea x S. repens ssp. repens)
13L Striae 3-25 mm L and usually noticeably higher than in other willows; has leaves like S. caprea and S. cinerea ssp. cinerea plus intermediate forms; pronounced veins on underside of leaves; oblong as well as oval and rounded leaves; leaf margin wavy; when fully grown leaves still only sparsely hairy to almost glabrous; no reddish hairs; stipules early falling off or absent except on fast-growing young twigs; larger than both parents.
► Salix x reichardtii (S. caprea x S. cinerea)
13m Similar to 13L Salix x reichardtii but underside of leaves with reddish hairs; tree rather than shrub but strongly branched from base. (Note Meikle: russet hair is not always inherited .)
► Salix x quercifolia (S. caprea x S. cinerea ssp. oleifolia)
13n Striae 1-10-(16) mm L, numerous, strongly varying in length; leaves 3-12.5 cm L, 1-3.4 cm W; leaves pointedly wedge-shaped at base and apex; broad central part; leaves short shoot under vague nervature, long shoot under more pronounced nervature; two somewhat different leaf shapes according to whether they tend more towards one parent or the other. With grey hairy twigs.
In female catkins the stigma is as long as the style. In S. x smithiana the stigma is longer than the style. In male catkins of x holosericea the catkins are shorter than those of x smithiana.
