Caracteristics 13 continued two

'Striae, short and long'  (continued)

13o Striae 2-7 mm L; leaves long shoot 12-20-(22) cm L; 1.5-3-(3.6) cm W; short shoot shorter leaves; narrow wedge-shaped base; leaves not parallel, widest in middle; mesophyll underside greyish-light blue; leaves rather widely spaced in cf. with Catkins; at least underside entire seasonally hairy; leaves on 1-year-old twigs flat and weakly toothed, entire margin on other leaves; red lenticels on younger twigs; to 6 m H; in Flanders female clone, also male in the Netherlands; apt name given by some beekeepers: 'viminalis gigantea'.

Salix gmelinii clone 'Gewone kletters'

13p Striae 2-7 mm L; leaf blade (5)-10-15(-18) cm L ; 1.5-3.2 cm B; petiole 6-20 mm L; short shoot shorter leaves; leaves at apex of branches rather densely packed in cf. with Gewone kletters; +/- parallel margins; widest in centre; leaves dark green at top, sparsely hairy and grey-blue-green below, felty, crenulate hairy; leaf margin on 1-year-old twigs wrinkled and distinctly crenate; stipules large conspicuous with pointed apex up to 10 mm L and 5 mm W; red lenticels on younger twigs; looks darker than clone ' Gewone kletters'; up to 6 m H; female clone.

Salix gmelinii clone 'Kattekletters'

13q Striae distinct and spreading, 2-5 mm L; leaves oblong, 4-10 cm L, 0.7-2 cm W; upper surface dark dull green and almost glabrous or downy; lower surface ash-grey and lightly abutting hairy or downy; leaf tip pointed or pointed; leaf base rather narrowly wedge-shaped; leaf margin curved, entire or irregularly toothed, often wavy; nervature distinct below; short petiole, rarely > 6 mm; stipules persistent, pointed with toothed-wavy margins; twigs rather thin, first dense or light grey-dark, often smooth and dark red-brown depending on age; erect, more branched shrub or small tree, < 5 m H.

Salix x fruticosa (S. aurita x S. viminalis)

13r Striae 5-40 mm L; other characteristics still unknown; perhaps S. x multinervis x S. caprea.

Salix x woloszczakii (S. aurita x S. caprea x S. cinerea)

13s Striae 6-30 mm L; leaves oval, elliptic, shortly pointed; 2.5-8 cm L; 2-3x L than B; upper surface green, matted, glabrous; lower surface greyish-green with prominent main vein; upper surface smooth; leaf margin very coarse and distinctly toothed; stipules well-developed, asymmetric, toothed margin with glands; twigs glabrous or short downy towards top; first smooth and greenish-grey, vertical stripes on branches 2-4y old, then brownish; red lenticels on younger twigs; rather spherical tall shrub, erect twigs, up to 6 m H rarely up to 10 m H; very long evergreen. Striking leaves that turn their pale undersides towards the light, striking from afar.

Salix apennina

13t Striae at most 2-6 mm L, sometimes without; leaves of vigorously grown annual twigs with a rounded or broadly wedge-shaped base, 13-16 cm L, 3-3.5 (5.5) cm W; common leaves short shoot 5.5-9 (-11) cm L, 1.5-2.2 cm W; conspicuously protruding nervature leaf underside; rhombic lenticels from 5 years and older twigs; buds male plants conspicuously large with yellow-green tip; relatively large female catkins. In male plants, catkins appear before the leaves; in female ones flush with the leaves. Sturdy shrub or small tree with bare green twigs.

Salix x smithiana (S. caprea x S. viminalis) see also 6f

13u Small striae 1-2 mm L; leaves lanceolate or narrowly elliptic; short shoot 4-7 cm L; 0.5 -1.5 cm W; leaves long shoot up to 8 cm L and up to 1.5 cm W; hairs underside silky to touching hairy all season (not softly downy); upper side initially strongly silky hairy but hairs gradually decreasing during the season; less conspicuous veins; entire margin; twigs (sometimes weakly) hairy; up to 3.5 m H.

Salix x friesiana (S. repens ssp. dunensis x S. viminalis)

13v Sometimes small striae, length 2-4 mm L, are also noted in Salix caprea. See Salix caprea 6a at characteristic 'Diamond-shaped lenticels on the stem'. However, there is a possibility that it is not a pure S. caprea but a S. x reichardtii (Salix caprea x Salix cinerea) inbred with S. caprea.

13w A very rare triple cross, observed in Belgium only in Aalst. Notable in some female specimens are the 2 fruiting ovaries per catkins, and the pink-purple band on the catkins. Leaf length is variable, in lang shoot the length is 4x the width. Leaf tip often twisted. Top of leaf dull green, underside greyish. Marked veins at base of leaf. Weakly serrate leaf margin at upper 2/3, below flawless. In the short-haired long shoot, petioles have a purple tinge. Striking and persistent stipules. Leaves turn black in autumn or when bruised.

Salix x confinis (S. aurita x S. cinerea x S. purpurea)

13x Leaves inversely ovate to elliptic-lanceolate; grey compressed hairy underneath, glossy to downy above; leaves long shoot to 15 cm L, 5 cm W; short shoot 5 cm L, 3 cm W; distinct veins underneath; stipules half heart-shaped and falling off; leaf margin sinuously wavy and toothed; leaf tip sharp to blunt. Twigs grey or green; striae 4-15 mm L. Early maturing catkins numerous and close together, ovate to cylindrical. Bract 2 to 3.5 mm. 2 glabrous stamens. Tall shrub or tree, 2.5 to 10 m.
