Frosted branches: young twigs are blue-white frosted.
Exception: after pruning, new twigs are not frosted for a while.

Characteristic: petiole begins at the bud. Stipules persistent. Catkins buds are swollen and remarkably reddish-yellow coloured. In leaves of terminal twigs, underside only initially hairy. Sometimes only hairs on the veins. Usually female specimens are observed.
