Westminster II Bob Triples

Notes by Alan Rowe

Rules

Above the treble

The method is Shipway Place above the treble. You can click here for more details of that method, but in brief:

  • If you pass the treble in 1-2 up, then go back to lead after making the place in 2nds.

  • If you pass the treble higher than 1-2 up, then make a place immediately after passing the treble, carry on with wrong hunting, then make another place immediately before passing the treble on the way down.

  • When the place is made in 7ths, this is added to the two blows that would be made as part of the hunting, resulting in three blows in total.

Below the treble

The method is St Simon's Bob Triples below the treble.

  • If you pass the treble in 3-4, 4-5, 5-6 or 6-7 down, then make 3rds and hunt out.

  • If you pass the treble in 1-2 or 2-3 down, then do a 4-pull dodge in 1-2.

  • If you lose track of the number of dodges on the front, watch for the treble coming back to lead as a clue when to stop.

Calls

The places made at call are the same as in Plain Bob:

  • 4ths at a bob

  • 3rds and 4ths at a single

Bobs

At the front, the effect is similar to a Grandsire call, with two bells making 3rds going back down.

  • The bell which was going to be 2nds place bell runs out to become 3rds place bell. This then makes 3rds and goes in.

  • The bell which was going to be 4ths place bell will be making 3rds when the call is made. It will then run in to become 2nds place bell.

  • These two bells will each repeat the previous lead of the front work

The bell which was going to be 3rds place bell will be hunting down through 4-5 when the call is made. It will make 4ths (i.e. it makes the bob) and becomes 4ths place bell, after which it hunts up.

Other bells are unaffected.

Singles

This is again similar to a Grandsire call at the front, with one bell making 2nds and another making long 3rds.

  • The bell which was going to be 2nds place bell is unaffected.

  • The bell which was going to be 4ths place bell will be making 3rds when the call is made. It stays in 3rds for a total of 4 blows, during which it becomes 3rds place bell. At the end of the long place it goes in.

The bell which was going to be 3rds place bell does the same as it would at a bob.

Other bells are unaffected.
