St Peter's Bell Ringers   Easter 1902

Annual Meeting

The first annual meeting of the above ringers took place Saturday 29/3/1902. There were present Rev'd J E Matthews in the chair, Ald E Ann, Esq, R B Chambers, Esq, Churchwardens, W Cartwright, F E Wormington, W H Roome, W H Holbrook, W Willett, Geo. Basson, S Smedley, A E Thompson, W Bidgood, Geo. Tomlinson.

The vicar opened the meeting with a short dedication prayer Mr R B Chambers then read extracts from rules he had collected from St Andrew's, All Saints, St Luke's, Ashbourne, Duffield, etc, from which St Peter's based their rules, a copy of which will be found in belfry.  On the proposition of Mr W H Roome, seconded by Mr W Willett, Mr W Cartwright was elected Captain.  Proposed by Mr Geo. Basson, seconded by Mr W Cartwright, Mr F E Wormington was elected secretary

Easter 1903

Annual Meeting

The second Annual Meeting of the above ringers was held on Wednesday, April 15th, 1903, when there were present:

Rev'd J E Matthews in the chair

R B Chambers, Esq, Churchwarden

Messrs W Cartwright (Captain), G Basson, W Bidgood, H Farnsworth, W H Roome, A Roome, and A E Thompson (Instructor).

The Vicar having opened the meeting with prayer, Mr Cartwright read the minutes of the previous meeting, which were passed unanimously.

R B Chambers, Esq, read the rules, and after some discussion it was proposed by Mr W Bidgood, seconded by Mr A Roome & carried, that the part of Rule 6 dealing with fines be suspended

Officers for the ensuing year were elected as follows:

Proposed by Mr W Cartwright, seconded by Mr G Basson, that Mr H Farnsworth be appointed Captain.

Proposed by Mr G Basson, seconded by Mr W Cartwright, that Mr Bidgood be appointed secretary.

Mr H Farnsworth proposed, and Mr G Basson seconded, that Thursday be appointed as the practice night of the band.

On the nomination of the Rev'd J E Matthews and R B Chambers, Esq, Mr A E Crinage was admitted as a probationer.

Special Meeting

(Election of Captain)

Owing to the resignation of Mr H Farnsworth (Captain) a specil meeting was held on Monday, June 29th, 1903.

The Rev'd J E Matthews presided, and there were present Messrs R B Chambers, Esq, (Churchwarden), G Basson, W Bidgood, W Cartwright, G Tomlinson, F Wormington (Bell Ringers) and A E Thompson (Instructor).

On the proposition of Mr Bidgood, seconded by Mr Cartwright, W Willett, Mr Wormington was elected Captain in place of Mr Farnsworth.

The question of the appointment of two additional bellringers, not members of the congregation, was discussed; and the matter was left in the hands of the Vicar and Churchwardens.

(Messrs J Davies and G Thompson were appointed official ringers on Oct 13th)

Mr Crinage was appointed an Official Ringer  on Oct 13th 1903.

Easter 1904

Annual Meeting

The third Annual Meeting of the St Peter's Bellringers was held on Wednesday, April 13th, 1904, and there were present:

Messrs A E Thompson, W J Bidgood, W Cartwright, A E Crinage , J Davies, W Holbrook, A Roome, G Thompson, F W Wormington.

The secretary reported Messrs Basson and Tomlinson resigned from August 1903, and that the vacant places had been filled by Messrs J Davies and G Thompson.

On the proposition of the Rev'd J E Matthews, seconded by Mr W Bidgood, it was decided to increase the number of Official Ringers to twelve.

A vote of thanks was proposed to the Chairman, the Rev'd J E Matthews, by Mr Wormington, seconded by Mr Cartwright.

These several resolutions were carried unanimously.

Easter 1905

Annual Meeting

The fourth Annual Meeting of St Peter's Ringers was held on Wednesday, May 10th, 1905.

The Rev'd J E Matthews occupied the chair, and there were present

R B Chambers, Esq (Churchwarden) and Messrs Basson, Bidgood, Crinage, Davies, Glew, W Holbrook, Shreeve, G Thompson and Wormington.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read by the Secretary and on the proposition of Mr Wormington, seconded by Mr Davies, they were signed.

The Secretary reported that Messrs Basson and G Tomlinson had re-joined the band since the last meeting.

On Mr Holbrook's proposition seconded by Mr G Basson, Mr J Davies was elected Captain of the Band for the ensuing year.

It was proposed by Mr G Thompson seconded by Mr E A Crinage, that Mr Bidgood be Secretary. This was carried.

The Vicar proposed a hearty vote of thanks to the retiring Captain and after Mr J Davies had seconded, Mr Wormington suitably replied.

Mr R B Chambers recommended that to act as a check on the register of attendances, and to avoid the possibility of error, tha a list of such attendances be kept posted up in the ringing chamber.

Mr Crinage recommended and Mr Bidgood supported that Mr J Glew be made an official ringer.

This matter was left in the hands of the Vicar and Churchwardens.

Mr R B Chambers mentioned that on several occasions ringing had not commenced or finished at the appointed times, and strongly recommended that strict punctuality be observed both in starting and dropping the bells.

The meeting concluded with a hearty vote of thanks to the Vicar for presiding over the meeting.

This was proposed by Mr R B Chambers, seconded by Mr Wormington and carried unanimously.

Easter 1906

Annual Meeting

The fifth Annual Meeting of St Peter's Ringers, was held on Monday April 23rd 1906.

The Rev'd J E Matthews occupied the chair, & there were present R B Chamber, Esq, (Churchwarden) & the following ringers: Messrs G Basson, W Bidgood, E A Crinage, W Holbrook, A Roome, G Tomlinson, F Wormington, & F Foster.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read by the Secretary, & signed.

On the proposition of Mr W J Bidgood, seconded by Mr W Holbrook, Mr G Thompson was elected Captain for the ensuing year, Mr Davies having resigned.

It was proposed by Mr E A Crinage, seconded by Mr W J Bridgood that Mr G Tomlinson be Secretary.

This was carried.

Mr G Basson thanked the Vicar & Churchwardens for Ringing fees, for Dr Ogle's funeral.

Mr Chambers, again, strongly recommended, that strict punctuality be observed, both in starting & dropping the Bells.

Mr W J Bidgood, proposed, & Mr G Tomlinson seconded, that Thursday Evening be re-appointed, as the practice night.

Mr G Basson called attention to the fact that there had never been a hand-bell practice, on the third Thursday in each month, as previously arranged.

Owing to the unavoidable absence of the Captain, on practice nights, Mr G Tomlinson proposed, seconded by Mr G Basson, that Mr W J Bidgood, be appointed Vice-Captain.

Mr G Basson proposed that a hand-basin be provided for the Ringers to wash their hands.

The Vicar & Churchwarden agreed to consider the matter.

Annual Meeting, 

Easter 1907

The sixth Annual Meeting of above, was held on Thursday, April 25th, 1907.

The Rev'd J E Matthews occupied the chair, & there were present, the Rev'd J F A Stimpson & Ald R B Chambers, BA, JP (Mayor) & Churchwarden, & the following ringers: Mr G Basson, Mr J W Glew, Mr W H Holbrook, Mr A F Roome, & Mr F E Wormington.

The minutes of the previous meeting, were read by the Secretary, & signed.

On the proposition of Mr F E Wormington, seconded by Mr A F Roome, Mr G Thompson, elected Captain for the ensuing year.

On the proposition of Mr A F Roome, seconded by Mr G Basson, Mr W J Bidgood, was elected Vice-captain.

It was proposed by Mr J W Glew, & seconded by Mr F E Wormington, that Mr G Tomlinson be re-elected Secretary.

These were carried unanimously.

Annual Meeting

Easter 1908 

The seventh Annual Meeting of above, was held on Tuesday April 21st, 1908.

The Rev'd J E Matthews, occupied the chair, & there were present, the Rev'd J F A Stimpson (Curate) & Ald R B Chambers, BA, JP, (Church-warden) & the following ringers: Messrs G Thompson, G Basson, J W Glew, H L Moult, W H Holbrook, W H L Dodd, & G Tomlinson.

The minutes of the previous meeting, were read by the Secretary, & signed.

The Secretary reported, that owing to the resignation of F E Wormington, & the removal of W J Bidgood, & also E A Crinage not having rung since June 2nd 1907, it was necessary to fill this vacances. 

The Secretary proposed the following as the twelve Official Ringers: Messrs G Basson, F R Foster, J W Glew, G Greenhill, W H Holbrook, H L Moult, A F Roome, W H Roome, S Smedley, Rev'd J F A Stimpson, G Thompson, & G Tomlinson, with H E Allen, H Wainscott, & W H L Dodd as probationers.

These were passed unanimously.

Mr G Basson proposed, & G Tomlinson seconded, that Mr G Thompson, be re-elected Captain.

Mr G Tomlinson proposed, & seconded by Mr W H Holbrook, that Mr G Basoon be vice-Captain.

Mr J W Glew proposed, & seconded by Mr G Basson, that G Tomlinson be re-elected Secretary.

These were passed unanimously.

The Secretary reported, having found one of the ropes practically severed, & made the following suggestions:

1. That the Bell ropes be inspected periodically.

2. The Bells to be cleaned more regular, & the Spindles lubricated every fortright.

3. The Clock in Belfry to be attended to more regularly, so that strict punctuality may be observed in dropping the Bells.

The Secretary on behalf of the Ringers, thanked Mr R B Chambers, for fees, for ringing, for the late Duke of Devonshire, & also for his Kind & Encouraging words.

Annual Meeting

Easter 1909

The Eight'th Annual Meeting of above, was held on Saturday, April 17th, 1909.

Mr R B Chambers, occupied the Chair, & the following ringers were present: Messrs G thompson, A E Thompson, F R Foster, J W Glew, H E Allen, J Davies, & G Tomlinson.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read, & signed.

Mr J Davies, proposed, & Mr J W Glew, seconded, that Mr G Thompson be re-elected Captain.

Mr J W Glew, proposed, & Mr F R Foster seconded, that Mr J Davies be elected Vice-captain.

Mr H E Allen, proposed, & Mr A E Thompson, seconded, that Mr G Tomlinson be re-elected Secretary.

These were passed unanimously

Owing to one or two vacancies, Mr Chambers asked, if any ringer present, had any names to put forward, or if they knew of anyone who would like to become a ringer.

Mr G Tomlinson, proposed , & Mr J Davies seconded, that Mr Fred Foster, be appointed probationer.

Mr Chambers, promised to put his name forward to the Vicar & Sir Edwin Ann.

Mr G Tomlinson suggested that leather shields be fitted to the ropes in the garter hole. Mr H E Allen was asked by Mr Chambers, to have this done.

The meeting concluded with a hearty vote of thanks to Mr Chambers, for presiding over the meeting.

This was proposed by Mr J Davies, & seconded by Mr A E Thompson which was carried unanimously.

The ninth annual meeting of above was held on Tuesday, March 29th, 1910.

The Rev'd F Harris Gibson, occupied the chair, & there were present: Ald R B Chambers, BA, JP, (Churchwarden) & the following ringers: H E Allen, J Davies, W B Clark, R G Basson, W Poyser, L Lomas, W Rouse, G Tomlinson, & Mr Poyser.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read by the Secretary, & signed.

Mr R G Basson proposed, & Mr L Lomas, seconded, that Mr J Davies, be Captain for the Ensuing year.

Mr J Davies, proposed, & Mr W B Clark, seconded, that Mr L Lomas, be Vice-Captain.

Mr R G Basson, proposed, & Mr J Davies, seconded, that Mr G Tomlinson, be re-elected Secretary.

These were passed unanimously.

Mr R B Chambers, mentioned that Mr W Cartwright, would like to rejoin the band.

Mr J Davies asked the Vicar if it was not possible to alter the Thursday night practice, (owing to being unable to practice on the 3rd Thursday in each month).

The Vicar promised to consider the matter. 

The meeting concluded with a hearty vote of thanks, to the Vicar for presiding, over the meeting, & also Mr R B Chambers, for his kindness in many ways.

This was proposed by Mr G Tomlinson & seconded by Mr J Davies, & carried unanimously.

1911

The tenth annual meeting of above was held on Monday July 31st, 1911.

Mr R B Chambers, occupied the chair, & there were present the Rev'd F Harris Gibson & the following ringers: J Davies, G Tomlinson, J W Glew, Fred Foster, F R Foster, J Haynes, & W Poyser.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read by the Secretary, & signed.

Mr J W Glew, proposed, & Mr Fred Foster, seconded, that Mr J Davies, be re-appointed Captain.

Mr J Davies, proposed, & Mr  J W Glew seconded, that Mr L Lomas, be re-appointed Vice-Captain.

Mr  J W Glew, proposed, & Mr Fred Foster seconded, that Mr G Tomlinson be re-appointed Secretary.

These were passed unanimously.

The meeting concluded, with a hearty vote of thanks to Mr Chambers.

Election of Captain

Owing to Mr J Davies, (Captain) having left for West Africa, a special meeting was held on Monday Oct 9th 1911.

Mr J W Glew, proposed, & Mr R G Basson seconded, that Mr L Lomas be Captain.

Mr W Poyser, proposed, & Mr Fred Foster seconded, that Mr J W Glew be Vice-Captain.

These were carried.

Easter 1912

The eleventh annual meeting of above, was held on Tuesday, April 9th, 1912.

The Rev'd F Harris Gibson occupied the chair, & there were present: Ald R B Chambers, BA, JP, & the following ringers: R G Basson, Fred Foster, J W Glew, L Lomas, A Stone, & G Tomlinson.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read & signed.

Mr R G Basson, proposed, & Mr J W Glew, seconded, that Mr L Lomas be re-elected Captain.

Mr Fred Foster proposed & Mr G Tomlinson seconded, that Mr J W Glew be re-elected Vice-Captain.

Mr J W Glew, proposed, & Mr R G Basson seconded, that Mr G Tomlinson be re-elected Secretary.

These were carried.

Mr Chambers mentioned that a rule should be framed that if ringers do not attend, say reasonably, they should be struck off the register.

The Vicar & Mr Chambers, agreed to F W Stone, A B Stone, & W Davies being appointed Official Ringers.

The meeting concluded with a hearty vote of thanks to the Vicar.

Annual Meeting

1913

The twelfth Annual Meeting of the above Society was held on March 31st 1913.

The Rev F Harris Gibson presided, supported by R B Chambers Esq, and the following members were present: Messrs W Davies, F Foster, F R Foster, J W Glew, J Haynes, W Holbrook, L Lomas, W Poyser, F W Stone & A B Stone.

On the motion of Mr Foster, seconded by Mr Glew, Mr Lomas was elected Captain unanimously.

Mr Glew was proposed for Vice-captain by Mr Lomas, seconded by Mr Haynes; this was also carried unanimously.

For the Office of Secretary, three names were submitted to the meeting, and on a vote being taken Mr Poyser was declared elected.

The Vicar mentioned the matter of attendance at Divine Service and said he would like to see the Ringers taking more interest in the work of the Church.

Mr Foster pointed out the interest taken in the work of the Church by a great majority of the Ringers which statement was corroborated by R.B. Chambers Esq. The Vicar deplored the lack of interest shown by Mr Lomas, who said he was not prepared to take any greater interest in the future than he had in the past, and also said he would rather resign. The Vicar, however, promised to consult with the Churchwardens and write Mr Lomas as to what action would be taken.

The names of Mr J Haynes and Mr J Lord were brought forward as probationers.

A vote of thanks to the Vicar for presiding brought the meeting to a close.

St Peter's Bellringers

Special Meeting, June 2nd, 1913

A special meeting of the Ringers took place on the above date, for the purpose of discussing alterations of rules, and electing a Captain in the place of Mr L Lomas, resigned.

The Vicar presided and was supported by Alderman R B Chambers. The following Ringers were present: W Davies, F Foster, J Glew, Jno Haynes, Jos Haynes, A B Stone, F Stone and W Poyser.

The Rules were discussed and a few alterations made; they were then agreed to. Mr J Glew was elected Captain and Mr Jno Haynes Vice-captain.

In Memoriam

The ringers desire to place on record their sorrow at the death of Sir Edwin Ann, Kt, Churchwanden for upwards of 21 years. They feel they have lost a sincere friend, faithful counsellor and a generous patron. Sir Edwin entered into rest May 18th, interred at Uttoxeter Road Cemetery May 22nd 1913.

On May 22nd in the evening, the following ringers took part in a Quarter Peal of Grandsire Triples 1260 changes, with the bells fully muffled.
