Shipway Place Triples

Notes by Alan Rowe

Rules

Shipway Place is mostly plain hunt.

  • Below the treble is right hunting.

  • Above the treble is mostly wrong hunting. This means that when lying behind, the place is made hand-back rather then the usual back-hand.

Additional places are required to change from right to wrong hunting and vice-versa.

Always make a place immediately after passing the treble on the way up.

  • If you pass the treble in 1-2 up, then go back to lead after making the place in 2nds.

  • If you pass the treble higher than 1-2 up, then carry on with wrong hunting after making the place.

Always make a place immediately before passing the treble on the way down.

  • If you were doing wrong hunting, then this will switch you bak to right hunting.

When the place is made in 7ths, this is added to the two blows that would be made as part of the hunting, resulting in three blows in total.

This table shows the order of work.

Note that on the way up, the treble is passed one place nearer to the front each time. This results in the associated place also being one place nearer to the front. In the same way, the places on the way down move one place nearer to the back each time.

  • A helpful tip is that the numbers of a place made on the way up and the next place made on the way down add up to 10, e.g. 7+3=10, 6+4=10.

  • Similarly, the numbers of a place made on the way down and the next place made on the way up add up to 9, e.g. 3+6=9, 4+5=9.

Starts

2 starts by leading.

3 makes 3rds and goes down (similar to Grandsire).

Due to the wrong hunting, other bells go in the opposite direction to normal, i.e. "odds go in, evens go out".

This table includes the place bells in the order of work

Calls

The places made at call are the same as in Plain Bob:

  • 4ths at a bob

  • 3rds and 4ths at a single

Bobs

At the front, the effect is similar to a Grandsire call, with two bells making 3rds going back down.

  • The bell which was going to be 2nds place bell runs out to become 3rds place bell. This then makes 3rds and goes in.

  • The bell which was going to be 4ths place bell will be making 3rds when the call is made. It will then run in to become 2nds place bell.

The bell which was going to be 3rds place bell will be hunting down through 4-5 when the call is made. It will make 4ths (i.e. it makes the bob) and becomes 4ths place bell, after which it hunts up.

Other bells are unaffected.

Singles

This is again similar to a Grandsire call at the front, with one bell making 2nds and another making long 3rds.

  • The bell which was going to be 2nds place bell is unaffected.

  • The bell which was going to be 4ths place bell will be making 3rds when the call is made. It stays in 3rds for a total of 4 blows, during which it becomes 3rds place bell. At the end of the long place it goes in.

The bell which was going to be 3rds place bell does the same as it would at a bob.

Other bells are unaffected.
