I teach Music in Term 2 each year. Each unit of work I do starts off very similar for the whole school, as it's been a year since we last learnt Music. I like to engage the students with an interactive Boomwhackers lesson, followed by a Percussion instrument lesson, Keyboard lesson and then move into the unit of work. The students love it and it's a great way to revisit past concepts and allow them to express themselves with musical instruments.
In Stage 1 I alternate on a 2 year cycle, two units of work. One unit is based on Percussion Concepts and the other is based on a unit from the NSW Creative Arts Syllabus: When I Get Mad I Beat My Drum. Both units involve students learning to play different rhythms and beats to a rhyme or chant with a variety of Percussion instruments in small groups.
