To start off the year with Stage 1, it's a great way to get to know the students by completing different drama games and activities. Then we build into learning elements of performance where the read the story of "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" by Eric Carle and in groups, the students create stick puppets of the characters and read from a script the story to the class and perform in our "Puppet Theatre".
Towards the end of the year, a great drama unit to use with Stage 1 is based on the story of, "Where the Wild Things Are" by Maurice Sendak. The students act out parts of the story in small groups to the class. It's amazing to see the growth of their drama skills by the end of the year with this unit of work. It builds on the students' knowledge of Drama and on skills of group work, playbuilding and their confidence in terms of performing to the class.
Another great drama unit for Stage 1 to end the year with is based on the Disney Pixar 2015 film, 'Inside Out" that explores different feelings and emotions.
