In Year 3 -6, students are using a mix of iPads and Chromebooks in the classroom. They are developing their emerging Digital technologies skills.
As part of my Creative Arts RFF lessons, I liked to dedicate one Term a year to using the time to focus on Digital Technologies skills for the students. The teachers were always grateful as they found it difficult to find the time in class to dedicate to this as well.
In Years 3 -6 I did a number of different units to focus on various Digital technologies skills. I like to start off the year doing a unit of work focusing on using the Chromebooks and Google Workspace skills. This really helped them become more confident in using various Google Apps and linking to Google Classroom.
I also did a coding unit on the Makey-Makey every alternate year to get the students interested in coding and they created an interactive musical instrument.
Recently I had the opportunity to teach Year 4 at my new school. My grade team and I liked to find many ways we could incorporate technology into a lot of our Investigations units:
In Term 1 for a Geography unit on the envrironment, we did a unit on movie making with Green Screen using iMovie on the iPads.
As part of a Science and Technology unit on Space in Term 2, we learnt how to Code using a Sphero a journey around the Solar System.
For another Science unit in Term 4, we learnt how to create an app using Keynote, to demonstrate the students' understanding of different forms of energy.
Lastly, as part of our PDH Safety unit, we learnt how to make a Podcast using Garageband/Clips to teach others about Safety.
They were all such a great units and could be applied/adjusted to teach in Stage 3 as well. I hope you enjoy teaching them.
