Classroom Seating:
There are no assigned seats (seating chart). That said, you may not sit on the back rows of the classroom during Class Sessions if a seat is available closer to the front of the classroom. In other words, students must fill all available seats in the front of the classroom during Class Sessions (leaving seats in the back of the classroom empty for those students who arrive late to or must leave early from a Class Session).
Note: Rarely does a student who routinely sits in the back of the classroom earn an “A” or even a high “B” in one of my courses. Why? Because the student who routinely sits in the back of the classroom is a “spectator,” not a “participant.” Suggestion: Sit in a different seat every few Class Sessions because a change of scenery can change your perspective.
Displaying of Name Placard:
At the beginning of the semester, I will provide each student with a name placard that must be displayed during each Class Session. So doing, allows me to get to know each student by name and to incorporate the student in lecture and discussion during the Class Session. Classroom seating and display of name placard during Class Session as described here is not optional. Note: A displayed name placard is a method for recording students' Class Session attendance, therefore, if a student does not display his or her name placard, the student may be counted absent.
Decorum:
For an effective learning environment to exist in the classroom, proper decorum is required: Don’t be a distraction.
Refrain from arriving late to or leaving early from Class Sessions. (If you must do so, come and go quietly, taking the seat closest to the door.)
Because I will often share important information or announcements (i.e., last second reminders) just before Class Session ends, do not begin packing up before Class Session ends.
I (as well as perhaps others) have an aversion to certain smells and sounds; therefore, be considerate.
Refrain from eating and drinking. Unless otherwise prohibited by KSU, a drink with a sealed lid is permitted. No tobacco use of any kind is permitted.
Absolutely no cell phone use of any kind in the classroom: No making or receiving phone calls, no texting, no web-browsing, no taking selfies, etc. Absolutely no sleeping in the classroom. Cell phone use of any kind and sleeping in the classroom are per se distractions and, as such, neither is permitted under any circumstances.
Any student who lacks decorum will be told to leave the classroom. To be clear, if you are observed using a cell phone or sleeping or otherwise lack decorum, you will be told, not asked, to leave the room immediately.
