"The expectation I have for my students
is the same as the standard I have for myself:
'Show up every day
—plugged in (prepared)
and ready to go (to participate)—
so, on a day you can’t,
you don’t have to feel guilty about it.'”
--Professor Altom
Attendance will be taken at least once during each Class Session, and it is your responsibility to make certain that you initial the attendance sheet when it is circulated during each Class Session.
In a sixteen-week semester, you are permitted no more than six absences if your class is scheduled to meet three times per week, no more than four absences if your class is scheduled to meet two times per week, and no more than two absences if your class is scheduled to meet one time per week.
In an accelerated eight-week summer semester in which each Class Session is the equivalent of one week of Class Sessions in a sixteen-week semester, if your class is scheduled to meet two times per week, you are permitted no more than two absences.
Class Session Attendance&Punctuality accounts for 5% of your Final Grade. Exceeding the permitted number absences during the semester and/or being late to Class Sessions will adversely affect your Final Grade.
No distinction is made between an excused absence and an unexcused absence. You are not required to notify me regarding any absence. You may notify me if you will be absent for an extended period (i.e., more than one week of Class Sessions).
A student is considered "on time" if the student has signed the attendance sheet and is settle in their seat before the time that Class Session is scheduled to begin.
If you are absent, it is your responsibility to contact another student (e.g., your class partner) to determine what was covered during the missed Class Session, including course topics as well as any announcements related to the Course Schedule (e.g., Class Sessions, reading assignments, assignments, quizzes/tests/exams, etc.). After you have (i) completed the reading assignment related to the missed Class Session, and (ii) contacted another student (e.g., your class partner) to determine what was covered during the missed Class Session, I will be happy to answer your specific questions about course topics covered during the missed Class Session. However, please do not contact me with “can you let me know what I missed when I was absent” because it would be impossible to recreate, or even summarize, a two hour and 45-minute, a 75-minute or even a 50-minute lecture and discussion presented during the missed Class Session.
Note: No longer attending Class Sessions does not constitute withdrawal from the course. Withdrawal from the course requires affirmative action by the student in accordance with the University’s established policies and procedures. You will receive a zero for any missed assignment and test/exam until you have officially withdrawn from the course. You will also continue receiving e-mails sent to students via D2L E-mail or otherwise until you have officially withdrawn from the course.
