The original design studio project focused on the conceptualization and development of a unique studio retreat. The core objective of the project was to merge artistic expression with functional spatial design, creating an inspiring environment tailored for deep focus and creative output. My design approach was heavily driven by a desire to translate the distinct visual and structural language of artist Alexander Calder into a physical, habitable architectural form. The resulting proposal, "The Stabile House," sought to capture the essence of Calder’s dynamic yet grounded kinetic sculptures by utilizing a bold structural framework that stood as a piece of art within the landscape.
1. AI-Assisted Pre-Course Research
One of the most successful phases of the original project was the initial baseline research and conceptual formulation. Long before enrolling in this official AI application course, I utilized the AI tool Gemini to streamline my data collection and cross-reference architectural principles. Gemini proved to be an invaluable assistant during this phase; it allowed me to quickly parse through complex literature regarding Alexander Calder’s artistic philosophy, his transition between mobiles and stabiles, and the specific physical dimensions of his mid-century installations. This AI-assisted research phase went smoothly and provided a robust academic foundation that heavily supported my baseline understanding of how to bridge fine art with built form, demonstrating the utility of conversational AI even at a pre-course level.
2. Conceptual and Aesthetic Application
Aesthetically and sculpturally, the architectural translation of the concept was highly successful. The primary goal was to make the building itself look and feel like an extension of Calder's artwork, and the final design achieved this exact artistic language. By utilizing an exposed, expressive structural framework, the retreat mirrored the bold lines and structural honesty of Calder’s stabiles. The spatial geometry, the configuration of the structural framing, and the overall silhouette of the building successfully communicated a sense of balanced weight and poetic structural form, receiving positive feedback for its strong conceptual clarity.

While the aesthetic vision of the project was fully realized, the building's environmental design performed poorly. In my pursuit of replicating the light, transparent, and floating characteristics of Calder’s work, I relied strictly on an uncompromising material palette of exposed steel and expansive glass curtain walls. This material selection proved to be a severe oversight regarding tropical environmental performance. The vast glazed surfaces created an intense greenhouse effect, leading to excessive solar heat gain, unmanageable glare, and an incredibly harsh interior microclimate. By prioritizing absolute visual transparency to match the artistic concept, the design severely compromised the thermal comfort of the occupants, rendering the indoor studio spaces hot and uncomfortable without heavy reliance on mechanical cooling.
1. Balancing Artistic Expression with Comfort
If I were to undertake this project again, my primary objective would be to discover an architectural methodology that balances artistic expression with human comfort. I would challenge myself to maintain the signature, iconic look of Calder's sculptural artwork without blindly sacrificing thermal comfort and interior privacy. The goal would be to find harmony between the external aesthetic and internal liveability.
2. Advanced AI-Driven Material and Shading Exploration
To achieve this balance, I would strategically leverage the advanced AI workflows learned throughout this course. Admittedly, I do not know the exact physical solution to this material conflict yet. However, by deploying generative AI and optimization tools now, I would explore alternative high-performance materials, smart glass technologies, and automated shading systems. I would use AI to iterate complex facade systems—such as kinetic louvers that mimic the moving parts of a Calder mobile—to block harsh solar radiation while preserving the structural transparency and views. AI would serve as the bridge to solve the exact environmental issues that restricted my original design.
