Hello everyone.
This video is about my final assignment and my journey of using AI in architecture.
For this project, I went back to one of my earlier studio projects, which is a Studio Retreat for Alexander Calder, and I used AI to help me rethink, question, and improve the design.
The site is in Port Dickson, Malaysia, on a coastal site with the north side facing the sea. From the beginning, I knew the site conditions were important. The climate is hot and humid, and the design had to respond to sunlight, wind, ventilation, shade, and the sea view.
The artist I designed for is Alexander Calder, and that became a very important part of the project. When I looked at Calder’s work, I was interested not only in the shapes of his sculptures, but also in the feeling behind them. His work has balance, movement, suspension, lightness, and moments of tension. That inspired me to think about how architecture can feel still, but also alive at the same time.
At first, my design direction was more focused on strong sculptural form. But as I developed the project, I realized that it was becoming too heavy. It started to lose the lightness and openness that I wanted. That was an important turning point in my process.
This is where AI became useful.
I used different AI tools for different parts of the project. I used Perplexity to help me understand the site better, especially the climate, sea breeze, humidity, sun path, and passive design opportunities. I used ChatGPT to help me develop ideas, organize the concept, write reflections, and connect Calder’s artistic language to architectural space. I used Claude to question the design more critically, especially whether the form was too heavy or unrealistic. Then I used Gemini to compare the different directions and help me make stronger final decisions.
Through this process, I learned that AI is very helpful, but it is not enough on its own. AI can generate ideas quickly, and sometimes it can show possibilities that I did not think of at first. But it can also produce things that look good visually without really solving the architectural problem. Some ideas were interesting, but they did not feel livable, realistic, or suitable for the project. So I had to keep judging, selecting, rejecting, and refining.
Because of that process, my concept became clearer.
My final concept is called “Stillness in Motion.”
This idea reflects the balance between calmness and movement. I wanted the retreat to feel quiet and reflective, but also connected to light, wind, shadow, and the experience of moving through space. Instead of making the building feel closed and heavy, I moved toward a lighter and more open design direction.
The courtyard became a key part of the project. It works as a central reflective space, but also as a ventilation core. It helps bring air through the building and creates a moment of stillness within the retreat. Around it, the living, studio, and display spaces are organized in a way that supports both daily life and creative work.
In the final design direction, I focused more on openness, flow, and atmosphere. I explored thin structural elements, lifted planes, floating roof forms, open voids, suspended screens, and spaces that allow the wind and light to move through them. I wanted the architecture to feel more like living inside the spirit of Calder’s work, not just copying its shape.
This project also became a learning journey for me.
It showed me that AI can support research, design thinking, and communication, but it cannot replace my own judgment as a designer. The most important part was not just using AI tools, but learning how to question them, compare them, and decide what actually makes sense for my project.
In the end, this assignment helped me improve my design, but it also helped me understand my own design process better. It taught me that AI works best as a support tool, while the final architectural thinking still has to come from me.
Thank you.
You can also add this:
Use only voiceover narration with no talking head.
Show a cinematic sequence of:
Alexander Calder’s mobiles and stabiles
Close-up images of his artwork and sculptural qualities
My own sketches, concept sheets, and diagrams
Site analysis visuals of Port Dickson
AI workflow diagrams showing Perplexity, ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini
My design development from early ideas to revised concept
Final concept boards and presentation visuals
The visual mood should be reflective, creative, calm, and architectural, with a clean presentation style.
Use subtle transitions and let the visuals support my story.
