Hi, Everyone,
What a great show and share at the Mod Squad yesterday! See picture carousel below.....
We began with our challenge to use printed fabrics in a modern (aka non-traditional) way. They came in all shapes and sizes and really pushed the idea of using prints. Some were paired with solids to make them more graphic and others were exclusively prints - but all were unique. Everyone seemed to have fun with this project.
Many of these quilts were scrappy because who doesn't have scraps and lots of them. So, Susan B noted that this Saturday, November 4, per the Modern Quilt Guild, has been designated International Scrap Sorting Day. So, if you want to participate, grab your bucket o' scraps and a fresh box and get on with ironing, cutting, sorting, and arranging those scraps for future projects!
Next on the agenda were a few projects that people are working on - some modern, some not, some small, some not. Becky & Sue T talked about the Modern Quilt Studio's Summer Camp mystery that they and Judy had participated in this summer. The premise was summer camp and summer activities with short questionnaires about our likes that were paired with simple blocks to create one-of-a-kind quilts with three different sizes and settings. It was a fun quiltalong that was kept interesting by color and fabric choices and the graphic nature of the blocks. There is a new quiltalong from MQS beginning January 1 (introduction will be November 1) entitled Secret Agent. Check it out at www.modernquiltstudio.com ....and you can check out the gallery of Summer Camp mysteries as well.
Next challenge: Snip, rip & drop. Participants were asked to bring a half-yard of a batik and a pair of scissors. We stood in a circle, snipped the half-yard in half, dropped one piece and moved the other to the next person. After five rounds, we each left with a fat quarter, an eighth of a yard, a sixteenth of a yard, and two thirty-seconds of a yard - all different and all needed to be used somewhere on the top of the quilted item. You may add as many or as few fabrics as you'd like of whatever quantities you'd like but you must use some of each of these five fabrics. A good suggestion before beginning is to take a picture of the fabrics in case you forget what you had received. The final product is due at our January meeting - Saturday, January 27 at 12:30 pm at the Charlton Library.
Isn't it interesting that International Scrap Sorting Day is this weekend and we have a sort-of scrap project as our next challenge? Who knew?
That's it for now. I'm off to take a picture of my batiks and decide which bucket of scraps to tackle first.
Thanks,
Sue T
