Yesterday's Mod Squad meeting was lots of fun. Everyone seemed to have a great time with the monochromatic challenge. The colors went across the spectrum - pink (Becky B), red (Susan B), orange (Annemarie), yellow-green (Joy), green (Mary), blue-green (Ashlee), blue (Sue T), purple (Marcia), brown (Michelle), and gray (Judy, Ros, Susan B). Many thanks to Michelle for taking pictures. Check them out on either Facebook or our guild website.
Our second round of Show and Share included the Secret Agent transparency challenge from the Modern Quilt Studio - both Judy B and Becky B met the challenge, of course! Even though they used the same fabric bundle, the quilts were different because of the choices that they made. These two prolific quilters showed a few other recently-completed creations as well. Then, we were treated to a special quilt from Ashlee and her mother, Cherri House - a modern purple and blue quilt made from silks. And, Michelle showed her Convergence tops that she has been playing with. Both Marcia and Ashlee have been working with sashiko and Susan B shared her re-entry into machine embroidery with a fun flower and butterfly wallhanging.
It's always inspiring to see what everyone's working on!
And, then, we had a great discussion on our next challenge. After hearing lots of ideas, we finally settled on our next TWO challenges.
The first is due in July and is our initials challenge. Your first initial is the COLOR, your middle initial is the PATTERN or BLOCK, and your last initial is the QUILTING MOTIF. So, one example is Betty Ann Smith - color Blue, block Album, quilting motif Stipple. I think that color is self-explanatory. Pattern or Block could be a traditional pieced or appliqued block. Quilting motif is really a finishing technique such echo quilting, free motion quilting, in-the-ditch quilting, pencil quilting, stippling, I googled Quilting Motifs and got lots of ideas.
Our second challenge - due in October - will be Scrap Soup. After some discussion, we decided that each participant would bring a quart or gallon sized zip lock bag of scraps that she thinks go well together and she will include her name inside the bag. You willl need to bring your bag of scraps to the July meeting. At the July meeting, each baggie will be placed in a small brown lunch bag and the exchange will begin. Each participant will be responsible for making a small quilted item which will then be given back to the original person during the BIG REVEAL in October. Scraps are expected to be of a reasonable size to work with and the maker may add to the scrap soup.
Our next meeting will be on Saturday, July 20th at 10:00 am at the Joshua Hyde Memorial Library in Sturbridge. I will send out a reminder about a week before.
Hopefully, spring has sprung. Enjoy the good weather!
