career exploration in bioscience - BTEC 15 (2 units)
An exploration of various careers in bioscience through online research and informational interviews. Includes development and presentation of a poster of a chosen bioscience topic to industry scientists. This course focuses on building communication and networking skills with industry professionals including professional workshops and seminars to gain internships and jobs through the Biosciences Internship Program. Appropriate for all levels of students.
What we do in Career Exploration in Bioscience
Develop and practice networking strategies, including informational interviews
Research biotech careers in the SF Bay Area
Build/develop your LinkedIn page, resume and cover letter
Create a poster around a bioscience topic (individually chosen by each student) to present at the CCSF Biosymposium at UCSF Mission Bay
Develop strategies to identify and interview for an internship at the end of the course
Students in this course will meet regularly with CCSF Bioscience Interns to learn more about their experiences and network
Network with Alumni currently working in biotech come to share their experiences and advice
Professional development workshops with guest presenters from industry and academia topics may include: Resume Building, Interviewing, Building a LinkedIn Profile, and a Biotech Industry Overview
Speed Networking Events held each semester with Bioscience/Biotech professionals from Industry, Academia and Government - most students meet directly with 8-10 bioscience professionals each semester!
Field Trip: UCSF Mission Bay and Lab Tours at UCSF, Gladstone Institutes or CZ Biohub (when possible)

Usually offered Fall & Spring – Fridays Afternoons (full semester)

Pre-requisites: None.
Programs: BTEC 15 is required for entry into the Bioscience Internship and Lab Assistant Certificate. Also recommended for students preparing for the Stem Cell Internship Program.
