Teacher Roles and Responsibilities
CAS Supervisor
Any adult (not a family member) who supervises an activity which can be counted for CAS
If you are a CAS Supervisor you may also be a Duke of Edinburgh Activity Assessor! They are essentially the same role.
Click here to visit the DOE @ Seisen Site and learn more about Teacher/Adult Roles in the Duke of Edinburgh International Award.
Responsibilities:
Approves the Supervisor Consent Form (which is sent to you via email) after a conversation with the student about their goals and plans for that experience.
Helps the girls to enhance their skills in that particular area
Meets with the girls to get updates on their progress in that experience (recommended at least once per quarter).
Checks that they are on track with their reflections for that activity (see tutorial)
Completes a Supervisor Review on Managebac when the experience has finished (see tutorial)
Key Dates for Supervisors:
August/September:
Grade 11 students approach you to discuss their planned experiences
September:
Grade 11 students will send you the Supervisor Consent Form via email (please accept/decline) and begin their experiences.
(Ongoing):
Grade 11 and 12 students will approach you to discuss new CAS experiences and send you Supervisor Consent Forms. Please check in with them regularly to monitor progress. They will request a supervisor review through Managebac when they are finished an activity.
March:
Grade 12 students will be formalizing their CAS portfolio and asking you to complete a supervisor review for any past or ongoing experiences.
What to expect from Supervisor Meetings:
During the first meeting, students should approach you to discuss their proposed experience and ask you to be their supervisor. They should show you their action plan (using the 5 CAS Stages) and goals (SMART Goals), including how they plan to address the CAS Learning Outcomes. Please advise them if you feel their plans are unsuitable.
After the initial meeting students will send you a formal request via email through the CAS Supervisor Consent Form, which you can then decline/accept.
Students should arrange to meet with you at least once per academic quarter over the course of this experience. Please check in with them regularly to monitor their progress (though you should not have to chase them).
Meetings should begin with students showing their past evidence and reflections since the previous meeting.
Please allow the student to gather evidence of the meeting (a recording, picture, letter that confirms the meeting took place).
What Not to Do:
Please do not agree to be a supervisor if you cannot commit to the responsibilities listed above.
Please do not feel obligated to chase students for updates. If your student has been ghosting you, please tell Xiaodan and she will chase them.
Please do not accept a supervisor request without first having a conversation with the student. They know they are supposed to seek you out to ask you to be their supervisor. Sometimes students list teachers as their supervisors without checking with them first. Please decline the supervisor request form and challenge them when this happens, as we want to avoid any surprises later on and it is not fair to you to have to do something you did not agree to.
When completing a Supervisor Review at the end of an experience: please do not approve the experience if the student has not proved to you that they have legitimately completed the experience. Students know that they must be able to prove what they have done through their reflections and evidence. You are under no obligation to sign off on the experience just because you are the supervisor. Ideally, this should not happen since the student should have been checking in with you regularly. If you have not spoken with them in awhile, perhaps reach out to them to see what's going on. If this does happen, please contact Xiaodan. She can have that difficult conversation with the student if you prefer.
