Consent

Did you know that nearly 1/3 of teen relationships are considered unhealthy or violent? According to the National Institute of Justice, teen dating violence is "physical, psychological, or sexual abuse; harassment; or stalking of any person ages 12 to 18 in the context of a past orpresent romantic or consensual relationship." While after the age of 18 it may not be 'teen dating violence,' it still exists. Research shows that nearly half of dating college women have reported experiencing dating violence. Although less common, men too have reported being victims of violent or abusive dating habits. Violent relationships can have long lasting effects such as higher risk for substance abuse, eating disorders, or risky sexual behavior. SO, how do we prevent this? The best way is to be informed. So next time you're looking to make it official, be sure your relationship has communication, trust, resect, and honesty.
