• • • • Hi Barry... are you actual friends with Esteban Trev... or just virtual... ? What do you know about him? I am asking because he lacks manners in the FB realm... and I am not sure how to deal with him. He has so little sensitivity to communication courtesy I find it difficult to believe he has any real understanding of the material he spouts... but perhaps you know more?

• • • • He's an odd bird. English is his second language, but that's not the problem. The problem is that he writes inchoate stream of consciousness, as if narrating fragments of an incoherent dream.

      • Now and then (but not that often) he writes a coherent and insightful paragraph that makes sense. Mostly he does Word Salad with incoming memes.

• • • • He more or less knows that people's eyes glaze over trying to apprehend what he writes. Perhaps someday he will snap out of his reverie.

      • You can block him if you like. That way he won't get Notifications and you won't have to puzzle over his comments.

      • Think of someone solving a giant jigsaw puzzle who juggles hundreds of pieces at the same time. He does, now and then, fit them together into a coherent picture. But it's no fun to watch the tedious process.

      • Esteban is the polar opposite of other contacts who are afraid to say anything in public, and engage in similar unending dialogues in Private Chat.

      • But eventually something clicks and they come out of it. However, it can take years.

      • If you like, I can ask him to kindly not post on your threads. Shall I do that for you?

      • You could also just unfriend him or use one of the other lesser affordances of FB to stay FB friends but throttle or arrest Notifications.

      • I've never met him in real life. I'm not sure where he lives. Perhaps South America or Spain or Portugal. I can't quite parse his "writing accent." He only uses "be" and never any customary declensions of "to be" for English usage.

• • • • OK. that gives me something to work with. I will figure it out. I am happy that he wants to contribute to the conversations that develop... but his approach is more of a hijack than an interchange. Thanks, Barry.

• • • • I've also been accused of hijacking threads, too. FB is a strange medium, where there is no visual image. No facial expressions, no inflections in tone of voice, no body language to interpret. Figuring out where people are, in terms of affective-emotional state or cognitive comprehension, or motivational drive can be quite the perplexing puzzle with some correspondents.
