Students are required to COMPLETE the early field experiences (practicum) in early childhood/SPED, elementary, middle or high school classrooms with Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) teachers. Child care facilities or programs are not acceptable placements for field experience.
Placement Information:
Many school systems have the following policy: "The school is NOT the first point of contact; colleges/universities and individual students should not contact any school, principal, or teacher directly about placement requests. Students will not be allowed to select a school or pre-service teacher unless directed to do so. Practicum students will not be placed at schools where family members are either students or employees. Current employees will not be placed at their worksite and should contact Human Resources about taking a leave of absence."

SCHOOL SYSTEMS conduct a national and state fingerprint background review on all individuals seeking employment, as well those wishing to serve as a volunteer, chaperone, coach, advisor, student teacher, or intern.
Results must be received, reviewed, and approved prior to an individual beginning in any capacity. There is a 14-day wait period.
Keep in mind each school system has different requirements for practicum students. Students must adhere to the requirements of police clearance and knowledge of school board policies. Students will be placed based on their selection as indicated on the practicum application. There are no guarantees. Any change of mind must be done in writing within the first two weeks of the semester.
