REQUIRED FIELD EXPERIENCES

Field experiences are an integral part of all teacher education programs at Bowie State University. Field experiences run concurrently with specific course requirements so students can link course content with real classroom experiences.

Program Requirements

Students are required to complete 150 hours in an appropriate level classroom setting under the supervision of the classroom teacher, with the approval of the core course instructor and advisor. The advisor should ensure that the site principal, PDS coordinator, and teacher are in agreement with the placement. All site placements must be approved by the field placement director, supervisor, and/or the MAT coordinator.

Police clearance on file in Field Experience Office (once):

Background Check

ALL students must provide evidence of police clearance and knowledge of the school board policies before entering any classroom. The procedure takes at least 14 days.

If you have submitted proof of police clearance and show knowledge of school board policies and submitted the BSU Criminal History Disclosure form, DO NOT re-submit the documents.

Tools for Field Experience

Keep accurate records of time spent in the classroom. Complete an attendance sheet with the pre-service teacher's signature. (sample)
Sign in and sign out in the school's main office.
Do not use or play on your cell phone in the classroom. If you have any research for the course, ask the pre-service teacher to use the classroom computer.

Documents to Submit

Complete the form on page 4 in the MAT Practicum packet.
After the completion of each 25 hours, submit page 3 in the MAT Practicum packet (above) to program coordinator and Professor Green. Use the Rubric to complete page 3.

MAT Certification Track

Practicum I and II comprise 150 hours of school experiences.

During the yearlong internship, candidates must accumulate a total of 100 days of teaching experience upon completion of phase II of the yearlong internship with a minimum of 24 days during phase I

PRACTICUM I – 75 hours Grades 1-3

PRACTICUM II – 75 hours Pre-K (including Head Start)
