Tweets concerning a particular controversy and event can be captured with “Twitter Archiving Google Spreadsheet.”
Installation Instructions and background can be found at https://tags.hawksey.info/
Additional Information/Instructions for older versions:
After you go to this site https://tags.hawksey.info/ click "Yes," make a copy and follow the instructions. Using TAGS requires you to have Twitter developer account, to provide an api key, etc. Instructions for setting Twitter API instructions are below.
TWITTER API CONFIGURATION
A small dialogue window entitled “Twitter API Authentication Configuration” will appear with specific instructions you’ll need to follow. For simplicity’s sake, we’ve incorporated them below:
1. First, register for an API key with Twitter at http://dev.twitter.com/apps/new. If you've already registered a Google Spreadsheet/Twitter mashup you can reuse your existing Consumer Key/Consumer Secret). In the form these are the important bits:
- Name = This can be anything you like. Hint: Don’t use “Twitter” in the Name.
- Description = Also anything you like as long as you use enough characters.
- Website = You can use your own website here or a placeholder if you don’t have one. Hint: Be sure to begin the URL with http://
- Callback URL = https://spreadsheets.google.com/macros
2. Once you’re finished filling in the form and accepting Twitter's terms and conditions, click Submit. Then you'll see a summary page which includes a Consumer Key and Consumer Secret. Copy and paste these back into the dialogue window in your Google Spreadsheet and click Save Configuration.
3. When your Key and Secret are saved, click on Tools > Script Editor. Once inside the Script Editor, click Run and choose the 'authenticateTwitter' function. You’ll be prompted to provide authorization and will be taken to Twitter.
4. Here, you’ll be asked to provide your script with access to Twitter by logging in with your Twitter account. Enter your login credentials and click Authorize App. You’ll now be redirected to your script.
When that's done, return to your Google Spreadsheet. Then:
Enter a search term in the box provided. In the spirit of Open Data Day, let’s use: #oddTO13
Click TAGS in the menu and then Run Now to make the magic happen!
Check out the tabs at the bottom of the page to get to the "Archive." That's where the tweets will appear.
STUCK?
If a minute or two passes after you click Run Now and you still don't have any tweets showing up in the Archive Tab, you will need to take the following steps:
Click on Tools in the menu at the top and click on Script Editor
Click on Run in the menu at the top of the new window and click “authenticate Twitter”
NOTE:
TAGS has limits on how much it can pull, but you can set the script to run hourly. Just go to the TAGS menu again and you'll see an option you can toggle on/off to update archive every hour
The TAGS Advanced menu lets you toggle on/off scripts that will collect information about the Twitter users
