Brownies Dog Show - 20th June 2018

At the meeting tonight the Brownies counted the money made at the dog show on Sunday. Drum ....roll... over £450 was made for The guide Dogs for the Blind, with more money still to come in. A massive thanks to everyone.

Brownies Dog Show - 17th June 2018

The Brownies organised a brilliant dog show to raise money for the Guide Dogs for the Blind. Over 100 people attended and 31 dogs were entered into the events. It was great to see how well the dogs got on together.

The event was opened by Sue Blower the Montgomery town crier, followed by a welcome from the brownies and a fine performance of 'How much is that doggy in the window?' The events were judged by Anne Lewis [with the exception of the brownies favourite dog]. The show was attend by Tony and Chris who brought their guide dogs with them and presented the brownies with their 'Friend to animals' badges.

The tea and cakes went down very well at half time. The final event, the dad's race' demonstrated the need for more dog training in Bettws and Tregynon. It was entertaining to watch the dogs refuse some of the obstacles - with one dog walking off in disgust! Thank you to everyone who helped, sponsored or attended the event. For pictures of the event click here.

150 sunflowers planted - 9th June 2018

To celebrate the 150th anniversary of the renovation of the church it was decided to plant 150 sunflowers on the bank of the church. Seeds were distributed to families, school, gardeners and people who wanted to take part - over 30 different groups. We did not realise until after we started the project that the sunflower was the 'signature' of the architect William Eden Nesfield who oversaw the work of the renovation.

Today we planted them on the bank of the church [actually over 175]. A big thank you to everyone who took part. It is a wonderful way of celebrating and getting all members of the community involved with the church.

An irony of the planting is we now know where the builders dumped the spoil from the church when it was renovated - the exact same spot we were planting the sunflowers! We found stone roof tiles, handmade nails and floor tiles amongst the rubbish.

Two intact stone roof tiles, black floor tile and handmade nail

Where will my church be in 5 years - have your say - 3rd June 2018

A well attended meeting with Elizabeth Day - transition mentor for the diocese of St. Asaph - was held at the Village Hall this morning. The main areas of concern were:

  • services only being held twice a month
  • the graveyard being full when the church actually owns more land
  • relationships with the mission
  • how to attract more people to the church

It was agree that we would look at providing 'celebrations' between the two services, accessing the land to extend the churchyard and a planned series of events to encourage people to become more involved - especially the young.

May work by the village - 31st May 2018

What a fantastic months work by the community. I've counted over 31 projects completed [click here to see all the projects] and these are only the ones I know about. The number of people involved in the projects has also increased and I've head counted over 80 members of the community and beyond who have contributed their time and effort. Normally I only put one picture up in the news but this time I thought putting up photos of some of the 25+ flower displays created by the villagers was a nice reflection of the community in action.

Thirty Years of Service - 18th May 2018

Congratulations to Glenys Jones, who was recognised last night, for 30 years of service at the AGM of the Montgomeryshire Girl Guide Association. We are sure that a lot of you have fond memories of your time in Brownies under her guidance.

Village tidy 12th May 2018

Eight people attended the clean up morning and the middle of the village looks a lot better for it. So far in May twenty different tasks have been completed. However, it was only when I did a head count of people I know have been involved in projects I was surprised that it was over 60 people. That is excellent for a village of our size. To see the work undertaken please click here.

  • An area of the churchyard - behind the rhododendrons
  • The village hall side of the river bank

The action plan for the conservation areas can be found here
