Community Council

The village of Bettws Cedewain is a small rural village which lies in a sheltered valley on the banks of the River Bechan with a church founded in the 6th Century by Saint Beuno which was the location of the village’s first schoolroom, whilst Brooks lies at the top of the rolling hills some two miles from Bettws.

The village of Bettws is a thriving community with many groups and organisations that provide activities for both children and adults many of which use the local Village Hall – the Community Council have given financial support to the hall committee for many years as it plays such a vital part in the centre of the village providing a venue for all ages from children’s parties to the ‘final farewell’ and everything in between.

The Community Council is an integral part of the village, several of the councillors were born and have spent their lives in Bettws and their knowledge and overwhelming affection for the village brings a very special dimension to the council and all its activities.

The local children have access to a very well used Play Park which the council established on land they lease from Powys County Council located in the centre of the village on the south side of the River Bechan – there is a footpath leading down to towards the Bull and Heifer Free House and the local shop with a footbridge over the river, the path was installed by The Community Council and the footbridge donated by the late David Thomas.

Our current projects are: Kerbing improvements adjacent to the Village Hall and the installation of a ‘sleeping policeman’ at the entrance to the car park in the centre of the village (this land is held in trust and managed by the Bettws Cedewain Community Development Association); assuming responsibility for the Presbyterian Church Cemetery, the council were approached by the Cemetery Committee to take over the management of the cemetery for the burial of villagers of all denominations – the legal hand over is progressing; finally the council held an Open Meeting on the 26th March 2018 inviting all interested parties to attend to discuss the Village Award 2018, we are delighted to be taking part for the second time in this by-annual competition, an ‘action plan’ identified a number of projects including establishing a village website, inviting The Wildlife Trust to visit Bettws village and advise on establishing wildlife friendly areas; this competition is an opportunity for us to work together to celebrate Bettws, a community with a heartbeat larger than its constituent parts and a spirit that welcomes and embraces residents and visitors.
