Background

Bettws Cedewain Community Development Association

The above charitable trust was formed following the closure of the Church in Wales Primary School – local people are trustees with the Diocese of St Asaph as Custodian Trustee. There was a tremendous amount of support from the community to keep the former school as a central part of the village with both the building and the land remaining intact rather than sold off as a potential building plot. A dedicated team of people spent many hours working on the former school – roof repairs, window repairs, decorating etc to enable the trustees to offer the property for lease. During this time the support of The Community Council was invaluable, they bore the cost of insurance until the BCCDA were in a position to take this on and repay the council.

In 2007 the trustees were approached by what are now the management team of ‘The Lifehouse’ – a privately run Special Educational Needs School. The lease agreement was put in place and the school opened in September 2007. Since then the trustees have been able to have the car park adjacent to the Village Hall resurfaced (with the help of a match funded grant from Powys Council Council), award grants to local individuals for educational purposes, the Outdoor Bowling Club towards the cost of roofing the clubhouse, and Ysgol Rhiw-Bechan to enable the purchase of a ‘Clever Touch Smart TV’, a piano and new percussion instruments. Most recently the trustees were able to fulfil their landlord responsibilities and have the building re-roofed.

The trustees are delighted that the building is being used for its original educational purposes generating an income that, as demonstrated above, benefits the charities asset, local people, organisations and the local primary school. We invite applications for grants twice a year, at the end of both June and December.
