Gibraltar Airways Ltd was founded in 1931 by the long‑established Gibraltarian shipping company M.H. Bland and initially operated a Saunders-Roe Windhover flying boat carrying mail between Gibraltar and Tangier, commencing 21/09/1931.
During WW2, the airline represented Imperial Airways and flew vital routes as the Gibraltar racecourse was transformed into a military airfield. Following the war, British European Airways (BEA) recognised the airline's potential and took a 49% stake in 1947. The airline began trading as GibAir.
