Last Christmas, starring Emilia Clarke and Henry Golding, is a cozy and heartfelt holiday film that brings romance, hilarity, and a dose of introspection. A movie heavily inspired by the classic Christmas song by Wham!, this movie intertwines the holiday spirit with love, angst, and redemption.
The plot narrates the life of Kate (Katarina) who is a “frustrated” singer who works in a local Christmas shop run by Santa (Michelle Yeoh). Detached from her family and burdened by her poor life choices, Kate tries to navigate her life until he meets the enigmatic Tom (Henry Golding), a witty lad who volunteers at a homeless shelter. Together, they brought a chemistry that is undoubtedly quirky, and tender— filled a little bit of mystery.
Although the movie might have an insufferable comedic style, and some parts of it falter with uneven pacing and overstuffed subplots, the actors and the plot became the highlight of this movie. Kate and Tom’s relationship grew more intriguing as the story progressed, showing subtle peculiar patterns. The suspicious disappearances of Tom become noticeable as Kate tries to proactively work on herself. This goes on as Kate finds out that none of the volunteers from the shelter know who Tom is when she tries to look for him despite saying he works there, and ultimately staggered when she uncovers the truth about who Tom really is in her life, deepening her intimate connection with him. This bittersweet twist elevated the movie beyond the conventional hallmark movie adding more depth to the narrative of the film.
With its festive-heartwarming story, Last Christmas is a perfect blend of Holiday spirit exploring dreams, family dynamic, and redemption (with a little bit of angst) highlighting George Michael’s classic songs leaving a lasting impression as a feel-good movie to watch with your loved ones this Christmas.
