Self-Help Techniques for the Whole Body

These pages are a work in progress, so please check back regularly as they will be updated!

Here are some of my favorite resources and videos that will guide you through self-help techniques for some of the more common issues I see. In order to keep the pages manageable on mobile devices, each topic has it's own subpage. Please click on the topic to get the information on the following:

1. Headaches

2. Neck aches

3. Back aches

4. Posture

5. Shoulder pain (& upper extremity, so elbow and wrist/hand)

6. Hip pain

7. Knee pain

8. Foot pain (includes some links for calf and lower leg)

9. The Feldenkrais Project, a technique that works for many things but is different from most physical therapy

10. A page for calming exercises

11. Balance & Dizziness

Some notes in general. Although you will see a preference for the KT Tape videos, I actually prefer this type of tape: KinesioTex Gold, which is not pre-cut but I think breathes better and is less irritating to skin. When watching videos with pre-cut tape, please know the strips are about 10-inches long. It's much easier to customize a bulk roll to your body's specific needs, which means less wasted tape. However, those pre-cut strips are perfect for traveling when it's hard to pack scissors!

How to Use KT Tape: General Taping Tips for Getting Kinesiology Tape to Stick and Work

Note: I’ve been taught that prepping skin with rubbing alcohol is too irritating. Clean skin (soap and water) should be adequate. If you are sensitive to adhesives in general, try applying Caladryl (clear is ideal, if it’s the pink stuff rub off any excess powder after it dries) or Milk of Magnesia (apply with a cotton ball, let dry, then rub off any excess powder) prior to applying the tape; this will create a light protective barrier to the skin. The tape may not stay on as long, but reducing skin irritation is more important.

You will also see a preference for the following practitioners who've already done a great job of creating informative and helpful videos.
