To fully understand anyone, I would strongly suggest you ask them about their hobbies. You'll hear about their passions and maybe get a better sense of how they think. That is why my personal website has this page about my hobbies. Hobbies help to balance an individual out in my view. I also find that while concentrating on the hobby, I am able to think outside of my business and I felt that sometimes I came back to the business work a perspective or tactic that helped my business.
New Hobby Coming.... 3 D printing (just received a printer as a Father's Day gift
A few years ago, I started to purchase a few engines and cars and lots of track to put together my own N scale railroad setup. Before I could move that onto a landscaped set up, we moved houses and packed up the train set. I simply do not have the same sized room yet to set back up the train set the way I want to and have spent more than a few years convincing my wife that a tunnel through the walls of a few rooms will be necessary.
I love wooden boxes. The majority of my collection are handmade decorative boxes made in Poland. At one time, I had a business importing and selling wooden boxes from Poland, but it became a distraction to my shoe business. I sold that business as an ongoing concern in 2003 or 2004 but kept my personal collection and have added on to it since then.
I love collecting pens. I focus on ballpoint pens, while most other collectors seem to gravitate toward fountain pens. I have pens from well known manufacturers such as Cross, Sheaffer, Retro 51, Xezo, Monteverde and a few handmade one of a kind pens from independent artisans.
For over 30 years, I've played in a weekly nickel-dime-quarter poker game with the same group of friends. It is surely not for the expectation of making a killing and no one loses much either on a weekly basis. If you totaled up each individual’s winnings and losses they would probably equal out. We play a lot of wild card games and that factor basically wipes out any poker player bluffing or skill that any of us have.
In 2020, as I was working from home during the Pandemic and waiting for poker playing to resume, I started collectingsample sets of poker chips.
If you ask my wife, staff or my colleagues, they all pretty much agree that part of my 'way of being" is creating a spreadsheet for pretty much anything. I use that program so much, is it pretty much a hobby for me.
I'll admit it... I’m a fan.
