A watcher that is a closeted Otaku — is known as a
reserved-weeb. Reserved, because rather than
participating in interactive websites, social events
in real life, or being openly interested in animanga
or Japan they do not reveal themselves. These
passive users try to hide under the social radar,
are high spenders, value immersion theming,
and Japan travel.
Looking without Socializing
Those that want to be on the downlow join the weebs without prior otaku experience. Many people transfer to the reserved group weebs from the Otaku side. The reason is there is less social obligation.
Hiding Out from Society
As a weeb westerner who admires anime and Japanese culture they search the web for related media. No participation and the safety of the home keep them from possible embarrassment from the masses.
Deprecation without Judgement
Self deprecation can be a way to socially shock others in a social situation. It stays optimistic while getting the attention off the topic of being a weeb through undervaluing oneself.
When joining the Weeb underground there are two significant
differences between being an Active-attendee and
Reserve-weeb. Length of engagement time with people and time
commitment differ and generally does not need to be active and
can be inactive typically. Interest can fluctuate depending on the
needs and can simulate active attendees when at events or meet
ups depending on the reason to gather or role in the group. They
will be more likely to meet online as it is close to home.
Being a Japan lover without knowing too much about Japan can
be what is known as a weeb. But with deep appreciation alone a
weeb can not reach the height of a responsible member of
society as a Japanophile Gaijin. Despite popular belief weeb has
its own linguistic meaning that differs from Wapanese and
watching anime or reading manga doesn't make someone a
weeb. A weeb is a word to inherently poke fun, but can be seen
as a derogatory term if projected against a stranger.
Watching anime is not strange, but having it playing in the
background all the time might be a sign of overly focused
interest. A weeb may not be the most invested in a series,
however they might be more likely to binge a series, or be a high-
spending whale on a gatcha-game out of boredom. It might seem
like depression or being overly anxious to go to Japan as a form
of escape, but thats just a few. Often times they are drawn to the
topic of Japan travel streams, or the sound voice filled by
V-Tubers as they stay in the safety of their rooms.
